Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. (1921–1987) amassed an extraordinary collection of 26,000 photographs between 1973 and 1984, recognizing that photography was an undervalued art form on which he might have a profound impact as a collector. He was mainly attracted to photographs that stimulated his imagination, and his taste ran toward the idiosyncratic—images that surprised him chiefly because he had never seen them before. In choosing the 147 works reproduced in this volume, Paul Martineau selected masterpieces as well as images from obscure sources: daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visite, and stereographs, plus mug shots, medical photographs, and works by unknown makers. The latter category contains some of the most outstanding objects in the collection, demonstrating Wagstaff’s willingness to position unfamiliar images alongside works by established masters as well as underrepresented contemporary artists of the time, including Jo Ann Callis, William Garnett, and Edmund Teske. This book is published to accompany an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 15 to July 31, 2016; at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT, from September 10 to December 11, 2016; and at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, ME, from February 1 to April 30, 2017.

How to read photographs: the new essential primer In 1973, John Szarkowski, the revered director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, published his classic volume Looking at Photographs: 100 Pictures from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art, offering a wide-ranging and accessible history of photography and an engaging primer. Now, American photographer and educator Stephen Frailey has borrowed Szarkowski's concept and format for his new book, Looking at Photography: 100 great images and a page of text for each. Frailey picks up where Szarkowski left off, updating the project to take stock of significant photographs from the early 1980s to the present day. Through a focused discussion on each individual work, Frailey articulates the themes and emerging sensibility of contemporary photography. Artists featured in this volume include Tina Barney, Jeff Wall, Steven Meisel, Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Tim Walker and Wolfgang Tillmans, among others. Stephen Frailey (born 1957) is a photographer, writer, curator, editor and educator. His work has been shown, published and collected internationally. He served as the Chair of Photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1998 to 2018, and is the co-chair of its MPS Fashion Photography Program. In 2003 he founded the Auction for Photographic Education in Afghanistan to create a photography department at Kabul University. In 2007 he founded the photography magazine Dear Dave, and is its Editor in Chief. He is currently the Director of Education at Red Hook Labs.

In the 1930s the history of Japanese photography evolved in two very different directions: one toward documentary photography, the other favoring an experimental, or avant-garde, approach strongly influenced by Western Surrealism. This book explores these two strains of modern Japanese photography through the work of two remarkable figures: Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto. Hiroshi Hamaya (1915-1999) was born and raised in Tokyo and, after an initial period of creative experimentation, turned his attention to recording traditional life and culture on the coast of the Sea of Japan. In 1940 he began photographing the New Year's rituals in a remote village, which was published as Yukiguni (Snow country). He went on to record cultural changes in China, political protests in Japan, and landscapes around the world. Kansuke Yamamoto (1914-1987) became fascinated by the innovative approaches in art and literature exemplified by such Western artists as Man Ray, Ren Magritte, and Yves Tanguy. He promoted Surrealist and avant-garde ideas in Japan through his poetry, paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Along with essays by the book's coeditors, Judith Keller and Amanda Maddox, are essays by Kotaro Iizawa, Ryuichi Kaneko, and Jonathan M. Reynolds, life chronologies, and a selection of poems by Yamamoto translated by John Solt. This book, which features more than one hundred images, accompanies an exhibition of the same name on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 26 to August 25, 2013.

Works from the past two decades and a new series from the Swedish master of the oneiric and the unsettling Mamma Andersson (born 1962) ranks as one of the most important painters of her generation. An artist who has long exploited the emotional power of color and texture, Jo Ann Callis is widely known for her inventive photographs involving tactile objects and images of people in mysterious, often unsettling narratives.Jo Ann Callis: Woman Twirling is the catalogue of an exhibition held at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 31 to August 9, 2009. The book, comprising sixty-eight color and fifteen black-and-white works that range from 1974 to 2005, constitutes the first book-length treatment of Callis's work since 1989. Many of these invented, dreamlike scenes of people and objects will be new to viewers, including a photographic installation of fifteen images of pastries lusciously printed in Cibachrome against textile backgrounds, and a more recent series of digitally montaged domestic interiors. Others, such as Salt, Pepper, Fire, in which a pair of salt and pepper shakers and a cup of coffee stand next to a plate of food that has burst into flame while a bird flies over the table, are familiar favorites. All of these works attest to Callis's singular vision of the delicate boundary between the world within and the world without.
