Excerpt from Jewish Mythology, or the Coming of the Messiah Letter-signs were understood to be astronomically significant; which meant that the history of individuals and nations was written in the heavens, and that the fulfilment was all experienced on time, as those letter-signs came to earth by divisions of time, and applied to names of things on the surface of the earth. Letters, and figures designating numbers, were understood as having bearings on the heavens by law of quadrature. This gave all points of the compass and gravitation. On these bear ings, all letters, syllables, words, and compounds had, first, an earthly meaning which bear on their bodily lives. Then, by vowels and division by puns, the same vocal music accompanied them on as souls into the realms of the future, where the same signs were used but the pronunciation lost to earthly articulation. This arrangement of language in space, with the bearings given, was the Temple of the Jews. T ms was the way it was built without the sound of hammer. This temple was destroyed again and again, as the people of the Jewish nation refused to accept it, or, through ignorance, could not see anything in it. The man who built the temple for the Jews was understood to be the Messiah, without any regard to his name. The names were different at different epochs of time, because the heavenly sheet of sign arrangement, slowly revolving all the time, brought it about. A comprehensive, inspiring and fascinating discovery of what Jews believe about the Messiah—and why you might believe in the Messiah, too. "The conviction that the Messiah is coming is a promise of meaning. It is a source of consolation. It is a wellspring of creativity. It is a reconciliation between what is and what should be. And it is perhaps our most powerful statement of faith—in God, in humanity and in ourselves." —from Chapter 1, “The Messiah Is Coming!” The coming of the Messiah—the promise of redemption—is among Judaism's gifts to the world. But it is a gift about which the world knows so little. It has been overshadowed by Christian belief and teaching, and as a result its Jewish significance has been all but lost. To further complicate matters, Jewish messianic teaching is enthralling, compelling, challenging, exhilarating—yet, up until now, woefully inaccessible. This book will change that. Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman brings together, and to life, this three-thousand-year-old tradition as never before. Rather than simply reviewing the vast body of Jewish messianic literature, she explores an astonishing range of primary and secondary sources, explaining in an informative yet inspirational way these teachings’ significance for Jews of the past—and infuses them with new meaning for the modern reader, both Jewish and non-Jewish.

This book brings together the perspectives of apocalypticism and early Jewish mysticism to illuminate aspects of New Testament theology. The first part begins with a consideration of the mystical character of apocalypticism and then uses the Book of Revelation and the development of views about the heavenly mediator figure of Enoch to explore the importance of apocalypticism in the Gospels and Acts, the Pauline Letters and finally the key theological themes in the later books of the New Testament. The second and third parts explore the character of early Jewish mysticism by taking important themes in the early Jewish mystical texts such as the Temple and the Divine Body to demonstrate the relevance of this material to New Testament interpretation.
