Excerpt from An Order of Family Prayer The compiler of this Order of Family Prayer, has long believed that there would be a more general observance of family prayer in the families of the Lutheran Churchy and that such observance would be much more interesting and profitable than that which now exists, if our Church members had access to a convenient, cheap, churchly, and well-ordered form of prayer, and were encouraged to use it. This want he has here attempted to supply. Instead of single, long prayers for each morning and evening for several weeks as are usually found in books of devotion, there is here a large variety of such parts as ought to enter into the devotions of a family. It is almost a full Church service. There are the Introit, the Ten Commandments, the Confession, the Kyrie, the Absolution, the Gloria, the Hymn, the Bible Lesson, the Prayer, the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Benediction, essential parts of a complete service for a "Church in the house." Yet they are so arranged, and such provision is made for the participation of the various members of the family in the service that even very young children will be interested, and the whole service will not weary as much as a service of less than one-fourth its length, differently conducted.
