"All these aspects of his life and art, including the rigorous training and arduous practice that transformed a blind peasant boy into a superb musician, his lifelong friendship with Olivier Messiaen, his sometimes turbulent family life, and the body of works he left - only J. S. Bach wrote more compositions for the organ - are narrated and analyzed by Ann Labounsky, who is uniquely qualified to write this definitive biography. A favorite Langlais pupil, she was asked by Langlais himself to write it and had his full cooperation for numerous long interviews over many years."--BOOK JACKET.

This is the first book on the French composer Jean Langlais to be published in English and also the first to provide complete information on all of his published works plus 86 unplubished compositions, and eleven orchestral works. This book traces Langlais' development from his early years of study at the National Institute for the Young Blind, through his long and active career as composer, church musician, and concert organist, and explores the impact that Langlais' hard work, determination, and talent have had on the musical world. It is divided into five major sections, including a biography, interviews, works and performances, a discography, and a bibliography. Listing 240 compositions written between 1927 and 1987, and containing a complete discography of both commercially produced and privately released recordings, the major portion of this volume is an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Langlais, with 536 entries, covering the years from 1926 to 1987, when he celebrated his eightieth birthday. Categories include general references, individual compositions, improvisations, reviews of recordings, nonprint sources, and archive information. There is valuable information on premieres, reactions to Langlais' works and performances, recital programs, and correspondence. The opus numbers, recently completed by Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais, the composer's wife, are published here for the first time in a chronological list of compositions, and the index section covers works, authors and translators, and general information.

The Stylistique comparée du français et de l'anglais has become a standard text in the French-speaking world for the study of comparative stylistics and the training of translators. This updated, first English edition makes Vinay & Darbelnet's classic methodology of translation available to a wider readership. The translation-oriented contrastive grammatical and stylistic analyses of the two languages are extensively exemplified by expressions, phrases and texts. Combining description with methodological guidelines for translation, this volume serves both as a course book and through its detailed index and glossary as a reference manual for specific translation problems.

A possessed motorcycle. A nosy detective. And a serial killer on the loose. The only thing they have in common? Me. This divorcee has always loved collecting random stuff, so owning a junkyard is a dream come true—until the robbery. My unlikely rescuer? An old motorcycle. I repay my debt to the trashed bike by rebuilding it with sweat, blood, and cursing. Because I’m done with the tears. As a member of the don’t-give-a-damn forties club, I refuse to be a victim. With my steel wolf between my thighs, I’m taking back the night. And who do I happen to meet on my first ride? The scum who robbed and beat me. I’ll teach them a lesson they won’t soon forget. Unfortunately, my antics draw the attention of the detective currently investigating a string of murders. He can bite my forty-seven-year-old ass if he thinks I’m confessing to anything but an interest in what’s under his button-down shirt. Turns out, there’s more to the killings than meets the eye. Apparently, it isn’t just cars that sometimes come to life. Impossible as it seems, my ride appears to have bloodthirsty tendencies. But is it evil or trying to right a wrong? I’d better figure it out—and soon—or I might be its next victim. genre: pwf, paranormal women's fiction, ghost romance, paranormal mystery, supernatural thriller

The introit is the entrance song to the eucharistic celebration of the Catholic Church, sung to a prescribed text that is thematically linked to the season or the particular celebration and belongs to the category of antiphonal Mass chants. The introit chant is the last of the Mass propers to be researched in detail. In this groundbreaking study, Christoph Tietze presents the history and development of the introit through the ages. He has also composed congregational settings of the proper parts of the Mass for the liturgical year. This book shows how to make these texts practical for parish use. It will help pastors, music directors, and seminarians better understand the texts for use in today's liturgies. Book jacket.

Known for his monumental wall reliefs and sculptures of animals from the 1970s, American artist Bernard Langlais (1921-1977) created a diverse oeuvre of paintings, sculptures and environments that shifted regularly and freely between abstraction and figuration--a shift that reflects Langlais' constant effort to reconcile his rural roots (in Maine) and keen sense of place with postwar artistic movements and ideologies. Now, in celebration of a substantial bequest by the artist's widow, Helen Friend Langlais, the Colby College Museum of Art has organized a long-overdue retrospective of Langlais' career, which this publication accompanies. Alongside abundant illustrations, three essays trace the arc of Langlais' career, from his early experiments in painting and his transition to wood sculpture in the 1960s to his return to figuration and his exhaustive exploration of animal motifs.
