Excerpt from James Outram, Vol. 1 of 2: A Biography Seventeen years ago, in accordance with the expressed desire of Sir James himself, the late Sir John Kaye had agreed to write the Life of Outram. What ability and power this brilliant writer would have brought to bear upon his task, the many readers of his War in Afghanistan and other books will readily understand. But ill-health and press of official and literary work interfered to prevent progress; and eventually Sir John Kaye died without carrying out his in tention. When in Paris during the winter of 1877 - 78, the question was referred to me whether I would assume this unfulfilled responsibility. Engaged at the time in the com pletion of an official report connected with a mission to the French island of Reunion, from which I had but just returned, the prospect of continued employment was agreeable to me. Though recently out of State harness, I had not been so chafed by the yoke of 'fixed Occupation as to seek to throw it off altogether: nor was I ambitious of a Leisure for which I did not possess the conventional qualifications. Excerpt from James Outram, Vol. 1 of 2: A Biography I take this opportunity of acknowledging the kind manner in which these volumes have been received by friends, reviewers, and the public - exemplified in numerous private letters, notices of the Press, and notably the demand for a second edition. While regretting that my transliteration of Oriental words has not met with general approbation, I may add that it is simply the dryness of the discussion which prevents a defence and full explanation of the course pursued. In any case, it will be understood that a change of orthography in a second edition would be difficult. To the present reprint an additional map has been supplied, at the suggestion of a friendly critic. Otherwise, the only chapter in which any modification worthy of note has been thought necessary is the First of the Second Book. For the more detailed description of the Forts of Manohar and Mansantosh and sundry new details belonging to the subject treated, I am indebted to General Sir Le Grand Jacob - a high authority, of whose welcome offer of assistance I have readily taken advantage. Bruce Fairley, Canadian Alpine Journal HOLY SHIT WAAAAAAAAAT A FABBBBBULOUS TOME. Tami Knight, Illustrator/Mountaineer This important new book tells the story of Canada's 200-year mountaineering history. Through the use of stories and pictures, Chic Scott documents the evolution of climbing in Canada. He introduces us to the early mountain pioneers and the modern day climbing athletes; he takes us to the crags and the gyms, from the west coast to Quebec, and from the Yukon to the Rockies. Learn about the European immigrants of the 1950s who pushed the limits on the rock walls, and the American superstars who led the search for frightening new routes on the big north faces. Be there when British expatriates pioneer an exciting new trend in world mountaineering--waterfall ice climbing. Witness the popular growth of sport climbing, both on the crags and in the gyms. Finally, enjoy the story of home-grown climbers. Initially slow to take up the challenge, both at home and overseas, they are now leaders in the climbing world.
