In this long-awaited book, Timothy J. Lensmire examines the problems and promise of progressive literacy education. He does this by developing a series of striking metaphors in which, for example, he imagines the writing workshop as a carnival or popular festival and the teacher as a novelist who writes her student-characters into more and less desirable classroom stories. Grounded in Lensmire's own and others' work in schools, Powerful Writing, Responsible Teaching makes powerful use of Bakhtin's theories of language and writing and Dewey's vision of schooling and democracy. Lensmire's book is, at once, a defense, a criticism, and a reconstruction of progressive and critical literacy approaches.

Site 45-OK-11 is on the north bank of the Columbia River in Okanogan County, between River Mile 576 and 577. The University of Washington excavated 1020 cu m of site volume from 1978-1980 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, as part of a mitigation program associated with adding 10 ft to the operating pool level behind Chief Joeph Dam. Systematic aligned random sampling with 1 x 1 x .01 m units of record in 1 x 2 or 2 x 2-m cells disclosed two major cultural components representing the Hudnut and Kartar Phases.

This book draws together the most relevant and recent advances in the area of ionic transport in animals. In particular, it describes the role of modern cell and molecular biology research techniques in this rapidly advancing field. These techniques have led to important advances in our knowledge of cellular mechanisms of ion transporting epithelia, the role and expression of osmoregulatory hormones and a new understanding of whole body salt and water balance.

This book surveys mathematics education, its policies and practices, in various socialist countries. Educational design and teaching is influenced by the social milieu in which they flourish; as an educational phenomenon, this influence is worthy of examination, particularly in the case of a subject as universally fundamental as mathematics. Included are an introductory section, detailing the scope of the study; a series of self-contained national case studies; an examination of selected aspects of socialist mathematics education practice; and a conclusive and analytic summary that considers basic trends and their possible implications. The completion of this work marks an achievement in international cooperation for the mathematics education community, with results which can benefit all.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Russian conceptual artist Ilya Kabakov was a galvanizing figure in Moscow's underground art community, ultimately gaining international prominence as the “leader” of a band of artists known as the Moscow Conceptual Circle. Throughout this time, he created texts that he would distribute among his friends, and by the late 1990s his written production amounted to hundreds of pages. Devoted to themes that range from the “cosmism” of pre-Revolutionary Russian modernism to the philosophical implications of Moscow’s garbage, Kabakov’s handmade booklets were typed out on paper, then stapled or sewn together using rough butcher paper for their covers. Among these writings are faux Socialist Realist verses, theoretical explorations, art historical analyses, accompaniments to installation projects, and transcripts of dialogues between the artist and literary theorists, critics, journalists, and other artists. This volume offers for the first time in English the most significant texts written by Kabakov. The writings have been expressly selected for this English-language volume and there exists no equivalent work in any language.
