Fred Lewis Pattee, long regarded as the father of American literary study, also wrote fiction. Originally published in 1905 by Henry Holt, The House of the Black Ring was Pattee’s second novel—a local-color romance set in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. The book’s plot is driven by family feud, forbidden love, and a touch of the supernatural. This new edition makes this novel accessible to new generations of modern-day readers. General readers will find in The House of the Black Ring a thriller that preserves details of rural life and language during the late nineteenth century. Scholars will read it as an expression of cultural anxiety and change in the decades after the Civil War. An introduction by poet and essayist Julia Spicher Kasdorf situates the novel within the context of social and literary history, as well as Pattee’s own biography, and provides a compelling argument for its importance, not only as a literary artifact or record of local customs, but also as a reflection of Pattee’s own story intertwined with the history of Penn State at the turn of the twentieth century. Joshua Brown draws on his expertise in Pennsylvania German ethno-linguistics to interpret the dialect writing and to give readers a clearer view of the customs and regionalisms depicted in the book.

As a stocky Thessalian merchant from Farsalos arrives in a small town seeking shelter, he is led to a building where he is welcomed by a servant-like elderly man. After Kloppas introduces himself, he finds it strange that the old man does not tell him his own name. Still, Kloppas brushes off a dark foreboding feeling and settles in to listen to the mans tales about his clan, tribe, and the wars that sometimes break out in his land. It is not long before Kloppas learns the mans nameAnaxarhosand of incredible times gone by. Kloppas becomes mesmerized by stories that lead him through years of history full of as much suffering as glory. Throughout the retellings, the Argead-Timenid creation and expansion of the ancient Macedonian state comes alive again as it is revealed how members of the House of Agis and other prominent lords worked together through their rivalry with the Greek city-states as well as the Persian wars, the Ilyrian and Thracian dangers, and the glory days of Philip II and Alexander the Great. Makedonia is the historical tale of an ancient peoples struggles to survive as the tables of fortune continuously turn from 700 BCE to beyond 323 BCE.

Life is a series of lessons. For the Christian the goal of each is to guide and encourage the student to become a little more like Jesus. For some those lessons are taught in the office or classroom; for others, they arise in the home; for others still those lessons may be taught on the road while traveling from place to place. For me, many of those lessons have come on the hard and often unforgiving streets of Norfolk, Virginia. Some will bring a smile to your face, while others may bring tears. Some result in great victory, while others appear to end in tragedy and defeat. Some may provide answers, while others may raise questions, but all have a common purpose. Each one, when learned, will lead to a closer walk with Jesus Christ. This book is a collection of those lessons written in hopes that you too may be encouraged in your quest to become more like our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. God is still, as in times past, using the most unsuspecting people to teach some of His most profound lessons. Join with me now as together we let the lessons begin.

Glances Backward brings together in one volume a broad selection of nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American writings about gay male love, including love stories, Westerns, ghostly tales, poetry, drama, essays, letters, and memoirs. Many of these works, such as The Cult of the Purple Rose, the story of a gay alliance at 1890s Harvard, are reprinted here for the first time since their original publication. Henry Blake Fuller’s “Allisonian Classical Academy” has until now been available only in manuscript form. In addition to works by lesser-known authors, selections by Henry James, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Horatio Alger, Jr., Jack London, and Willa Cather are included.
