A trip to grandma’s gets a lot more interesting when a cute crush is involved! Isabella isn’t exactly thrilled to be spending spring break with her twin brother and their sunscreen-obsessed, worrywart grandma in Florida. That is, until Grandma Miriam actually turns out to be a lot more fun when Mom isn’t around—she sings along in the car, buys them ice cream, and has tons of cool day trips planned for the three of them. But when Grandma Miriam introduces Isabella to her friend’s gorgeous grandson, Ryan, all thoughts of day trips with her grandma and brother go out the window. Will Isabella be able to get Ryan alone before spring break is over? And if she does, what then?

In 1883, Isabella Stewart Gardner and her husband embarked on a trip that would take them from Boston, across the Unites States and the Pacific, to Japan, China Cambodia and finally, the India of the Raj. Travelling in the wake of recent Western expansion into Asia, they were privileged guests in a world convulsed by colliding forces and identities. They visited ancient temples; met missionaries and colonial officials; toured rubble left but anti-Western riots; camped at Angkhor Wat but took first-class trains throughout India. Isabella kept a diary, bought photographs, and assembled a travel album. Back home, she became a pioneering collector of Asian art. 'Journeys East' reconstructs the Gardners' epic journey with illustrations from Isabella's albums and quotations from her diary and her husband's letters and notes. Isabella's evolving relationship to Asia is the subject of essays by Alan Chong, Noriko Murai, and Christine Guth, amoth other major authorities, that consider a broad range of topics, from the Japanese tea ceremony to her selection and display of Asian art at her extraordinary museum in Boston. A new kind of book, 'Journeys East' combines the history of travel and collecting with the study of East-West relations. Nearly all the 400 illustrations in this oversize book reproduce vintage photographs on her travels. In numerous instances, the photographs document sites long changed beyond recognition. The book will be of exceptional interest to readers of Joseph Conrad. ILLUSTRATIONS 400 illustrations

"A remarkable correspondence between two quite formidable and wonderful women, who were also utterly enmeshed in women's traditional world as well as the public world."--Mary Logan Rothschild, co-author of Doing What the Day Brought: An Oral History of Arizona Women "[Kristie] Miller and [Robert] McGinnis have done a real service to history and biography. Both Mrs. Roosevelt and Isabella Greenway were extraordinary women. I am delighted their relationship has finally been penned to paper."--Geoffrey C. Ward, author of A First-Class Temperament: The Emergence of Franklin Roosevelt, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians In these intimate letters, Eleanor Roosevelt and Isabella Greenway chronicle a fifty-year friendship dating back to their school days at the beginning of the twentieth century. They share family concerns, discuss national and world affairs, support each other in times of personal tragedy, and chart their respective political careers--Roosevelt as a social reformer and first lady and Greenway as Arizona's first congresswoman. Kristie Miller's and Robert McGinnis's astute analysis and insightful commentary enable scholars and general readers to view this remarkable correspondence against the backdrop of state and national politics, the Depression and New Deal, and the changing roles of women in American society.
