"Brilliant, vain, generous, calculating, Isabella D'Este played the Renaissance game with an expertise that outflanked Popes and Emperors, using her brains, her charm, and her unswerving purpose to psych her opponents. An accomplished flirt, an astute statesman, she kept Mantua, the state ostensibly ruled by her husband, intact and safe from a series of powerful predators: Cesare Borgia, the Republic of Venice, a succession of Popes, the King of Naples, two Kings of France. Toward the end of her life, she turned over to her son one of the few independent principalities of sixteenth-century Italy"--from front jacket flap.

The bed, dressed in hand sewn quilt or threadbare blanket, may in and of itself be memorable, but it is what happens in the bed - the sex and lovemaking, the dreams, the reading, the nightmares, the rest, giving birth and dying - which give 'bed' special meaning. Whether a bed is shared with a book, a child, a pet or a partner, whether lovers lie in ecstasy or indifference, whether 'bed' relates to intimacy or betrayal, it is memories and recollections of 'bed', in whatever form, which have triggered the writing of these thirty stories by women from southern Africa. Well known writers Joanne Fedler, Sarah Lotz, Arja Salafranca, Rosemund Handler and Liesl Jobson will delight, but you will discover here new writers from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia and Zambia, each with a unique voice as they cast light on the intimate lives of women living in this part of the world and the possibilities that are both available to and denied them. The BED BOOK of short stories - some quirky and tender, others traumatic or macabre - is the perfect companion to take to bed with you, to keep you reading long into the night.

In Isabella Bradford’s enthralling new trilogy, three noble brothers—London’s most scandalous rakes—are about to do the unthinkable: settle down. Harry Fitzroy, Earl of Hargreave, is the first to meet his match and lose his heart . . . to a lady who’s not all what he expected. As the eldest son of the Duke of Breconridge, Harry Fitzroy is duty-bound to marry—and marry well. Giving up his rakish ways for the pleasures of a bride’s bed becomes a delightful prospect when Harry chooses beautiful Lady Julia Wetherby, the catch of the season. But a fall from his horse puts a serious crimp in his plans. Abandoned by Julia before he can propose, the unlucky bachelor finds himself trapped in the country in the care of Julia’s younger sister. Harry has never met a woman like Lady Augusta. Utterly without artifice, Gus is clever and capable, and seems to care not a fig for society. After a taboo kiss awakens passion that takes them both by surprise, Harry realizes he’d almost given his heart to the wrong sister. While London tongues wag, he’ll use his most seductive powers of persuasion to convince the reluctant Gus that she belongs with him—as his equal, his love, his wife. From multiple award-winning author Candace Fleming and Caldecott Medalist Matthew Cordell comes the true story of a woman who always got what she wanted: Isabella Stewart Gardner. A New England Book Award Finalist For years, the indomitable Isabella Stewart Gardner searched the world for magnificent artwork and filled her home with a truly unique collection, with the aim of turning it into a museum, which she established in 1903. Isabella always did things her own way. One day she'd wear baseball gear to the symphony, the next, she'd be seen strolling down the street with zoo lions. It was no surprised that she was very particular about how she arranged her exhibits. They were not organized historically, stylistically, or by artist. Instead, they were arranged based on the connections Isabella felt toward the art, a connection she hoped to encourage in her visitors. For years, her museum delighted generations of Bostonians and visitors with the collections arranged exactly as she wanted. But in 1990, a spectacular burglary occurred when two thieves disguised as police officers stole thirteen paintings, valued at $500 million, including a Rembrandt and a Vermeer. They have yet to be recovered, though a $10 million reward is still being offered for their safe return. Author Candace Fleming perfectly captures Isabella's inimitable personality and drive, accompanied by exuberant illustrations by Matthew Cordell. "The earliest biography of Sojourner Truth, the Black abolitionist and women's rights activist. Blockson calls this work "one of the earliest narratives of an American black slave woman." Indeed, it is one of the most remarkable books of the period and almost certainly the first work dedicated to supporting the credibility of the testimony of a black woman in a period of very weak legal protections, when accusations and prejudice triumphed over evidence. The work, written by British-born newspaper editor Gilbert Vale, consists of a narrative of Isabella Baumfree, before she changed her name to Sojourner Truth. Based on careful interviews he made with her, it was written in response to the sensationalist murder of Elijah Pierson in the religious cult under the patriarchal dominance of a misogynist white male "prophet" called Matthias. Isabella was officially a servant in the homes of two of the cult's members. The work was intended as a full-throated public rebuke of William Stone's 1835 work Matthias and His Impostures; or the Progress of Fanatacism Illustrated in the Extraordinary Case of Robert Matthews. He accuses Stone of "transferring the sins he has taken under his protection to others not guilty of the crimes, but unfortunately poor, uneducated, and coloured. He could expect no defence from a woman, formally a slave incapable of reading or writing." This work supplied Truth with the necessary legal defence: she successfully sued her accusers for slander, becoming the first black person to win such a suit. Ref: Humez, Jean M.
