Both spores and swarm spores are quickly killed by drought and sunlight. This partly explains why it is that, although the fungus is present in isolated plants from the time they reach the surface of the ground. It does not spread to any extent until a month, or perhaps two, later. Another reason may be that the plant is more susceptible at and after blossoming time than m its earlier stages.
