This thesis evaluated the potential of neutron-capture gamma rays in elemental analysis. A large portion of the work was devoted to the development of a method for the analysis of weak peaks in gamma ray spectra. This was based on equations developed for the standard deviation in the measurement of the various peak parameters, consideration being also given to the reduction in the statistical fluctuations obtained by smoothing the data with the use of Fourier transforms. Two methods of peak area determination were considered end their relative effectiveness examined. An equation was then derived for the minimum weight of an element needed for reliable quantitative analysis. The equations were verified using both real and pseudo-experimental data constructed with the use of a computer. Experiments were carried out using the MIT Reactor with samples positioned La) in a high neutron flux next to the reactor tank (2xl01- n/sq.cm sec), and (b) in an external neutron beam facility of relatively lower but well thermalized flux (2xl0 n/sq.cm sec). Capture gamma ray spectra were obtained with a three-crystal system capable of operating in the free mode, the Compton suppression mode and as a pair spectrometer. The results were used to examine the relative analytical sensitivity of the internal and external sample arrangements and the various gamma detection modes. The minimum measurable weights of 75 elements were evaluated for a stainless steel sample. For these computations use was made of the listing of capture gamma ray spectra recently established by the MIT gamma spectroscopy group. 'In a majority of the cases the detection limits range between 0.1 percent and 10 percent. Equations were developed for extending the results to different samples and different. experimental arrangements.

Neutron-capture prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is particularly valuable as a non-destructive nuclear method in the measurement of elements that do not form neutron capture products with delayed gamma ray emissions. The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Samples of coal weighing approximately 200 grams placed in a collimated beam of neutrons from the thermal column of the Ames Laboratory Research Reactor produced capture gamma-rays which could be used for the simultaneous determination of sulfur and iron. Spectra from NaI(Tl) and Ge(Li) detectors were used and interferences were located by examining spectra of the major elemental components of coal. In determining sulfur, iron is a potential source of interference when gamma-ray spectra are collected with a NaI(Tl) detector. Corrections for iron interference were made by use of a higher energy iron peak. The possibility of determining silicon in coal was investigated but this element determination was unsuccessful since capture gamma-ray spectrometry lacked the necessary sensitivity for silicon. A linear relation was found between the area of the hydrogen capture peak at 2.23 MeV and the amount of water added to coal.

A new library comprising 30 thousand neutron capture gamma rays has been created by combining new measurements on natural elements from Budapest and literature data for all stable isotope targets. All energies and intensities are consistent in that they are based on the chlorine and nitrogen standards, respectively. Accurate neutron binding energies and thermal capture cross-sections could also be inferred for all cases where the level scheme is sufficiently complete. The new data can be used for nuclear structure investigations, reaction model calculations, and a number of applications, such as Prompt Gamma-ray Activation Analysis (PGAA).
