Water, energy and food are key resources to sustain life, and are the fundamental to national, regional and global economies. This book presents both updated and new measurements on water resources from selective pilot areas form the Middle East. Demand for water has become very crucial notably in arid and semiarid regions like in the Middle East. The changing climate and the increased population are the most striking challenges on water resources in this region where the largest part of its territory is dry lands and deserts with minimal precipitation and high evaporation rates, and thus, the average per capita of water does not exceed 25 m3/year. Will tensions and disputes among states sharing international water courses and lakes turn into active conflicts? Addressing this question, the book shows that these concerns are more prominent due to the locations and underlying political dynamics of some of these large rivers and the strategic interests of major powers. This book investigates the need for a more open and interdisciplinary dialogue on the nexus of food, water and energy security in the Arab region. It argues that achieving sustainable economic development is irretrievably tied to the security of the water–energy–food nexus, which is in turn essential for bringing about sustained peace. Further, it discusses various approaches to achieving these lofty objectives, and offers the following take-away messages: The Arab region is currently under considerable water stress, and the situation will continue to get worse with a number of global changes – most notably those related to climate and regional water distribution. Viable solutions are available in the Arab region and can be implemented through innovative policies, judicious use of new technologies, and stimulating public opinion. Integration across water, energy, and food sectors is obviously needed but achieving it in practice is extremely challenging. There are some gaps in the scientific understanding but at the same time there is a wealth of data and synthesized information that can guide decision-making.

This book presents the results of research cooperation between the Departments of Geography of the University of São Paulo, the University of Damascus and the University of Cambridge. It serves to refute the widely spread Malthusian paradigm—which forecasts conflicts due to water scarcity—by showing that this perspective has neither an empirical nor conceptual basis. It begins from the hypothesis that both sharing water politics and the use of technology can annul the water scarcity-conflict paradigm. To corroborate this hypothesis, the book uses two variables illustrated by two contexts: the Euphrates River basin was utilised to study the first variable of the hypothesis (sharing water), and to show that agreements on international river basins have assured fair use of water by avoiding conflicts, not only in the Middle East, but also in the vast majority of international basins throughout the world. The second context, the Persian Gulf and Arab Peninsula, was used to corroborate the second variable of the hypothesis—the use of technology to assure water supply; again, not only in the Middle East, but all over the world as well.

Shared water resources in Israel and Palestine are often the site of political, economic, historical, legal and ethical contestation. In this, the first of two volumes on the subject, the authors look beyond the political tensions of the region, to argue for the need for shared water security and co-operative resource management. The History of Water in the Land Once Called Palestine, traces the history of water resources and security and their development from the Ottoman period until 2020, examining how the state of water security amongst Palestinians and Israelis has diverged, resulting in the current success of Israeli water security in contrast to the high water insecurity experienced by Palestinians. The authors assess water security in three parts: security of access to water resources, security of access to water services and finally, security against risks to and from water.
