Excerpt from Introduction to the Herbartian Principles of Teaching Our educational text-books, in the past, have ftc quently been full of practical details, but lacking in guiding principles. We are beginning to atone for our past neglect of educational theory, and to recognise that a study of principles and ideals of education is of greater import ance than a study of the external devices employed by the teacher to make the child acquire knowledge. The subject taught is secondary to the manner of teaching, and the question for the teacher is not, What does the child know but, What is his moral worth? "The Elements of General Method, Based on the Principles of Herbart" by Charles A. McMurry McMurry was an American educator, and pioneer in American Herbartianism. Herbartianism is an educational philosophy, movement, and method loosely based on the educational and pedagogical thought of Johann Friedrich Herbart. This method states that maintaining the integrity of a student's individuality for as long as possible during the education process as well as an emphasis on moral training is a main education goal. This text breaks down McMurry's thoughts and his explanation for these alternative educational and child-rearing systems.

. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Originally published in 1972. 1900-1970 saw extensive changes in the teaching of English in schools. The volume studies English instruction as it developed at junior and secondary level over this period. Using textbooks, method books, Board and Ministry Reports and other contemporary opinion, the book examines the basic questions arising from this historical survey. Whilst the main emphasis is on changes in actual classroom methods, the volume also examines the wider social pressures which have modified the school system in the UK as well as English as a subject in that system.
