This text focuses on the analysis of data and the interpretation of results rather than the computational methods of statistics. Its examples are taken from a broad range of disciplines and screen shots from the more popular software packages are included to display data and graphics. Mathematical derivations are minimized, so encouraging the student to use a calculator or computer to perform the computations. Various technology options give the student a range of methods for performing the statistical computations. The section on uses and misuses of statistics shows how statistics are presented by graphs and charts.

Since the 1960s, testimony by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thousands of criminal cases has relied on evidence from Compositional Analysis of Bullet Lead (CABL), a forensic technique that compares the elemental composition of bullets found at a crime scene to the elemental composition of bullets found in a suspect's possession. Different from ballistics techniques that compare striations on the barrel of a gun to those on a recovered bullet, CABL is used when no gun is recovered or when bullets are too small or mangled to observe striations. Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence assesses the scientific validity of CABL, finding that the FBI should use a different statistical analysis for the technique and that, given variations in bullet manufacturing processes, expert witnesses should make clear the very limited conclusions that CABL results can support. The report also recommends that the FBI take additional measures to ensure the validity of CABL results, which include improving documentation, publishing details, and improving on training and oversight.

Statistics in Practice is an exciting new addition to W.H. Freeman’s introductory statistics list. Co-authored by David Moore, it maintains his pioneering data analysis approach but incorporates significant changes designed to help students. Statistics in Practice introduces data collection early, covers tests of proportions first before tests of means, and engages students with its conversational writing style. SIP is a modern approach to the introductory statistics course, clearly showing the importance of statistics to students during their academic life and beyond.

This book presents the proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Frontiers of Intelligent Computing: Theory and Applications (FICTA 2018), held at Duy Tan University, Da Nang, Vietnam. The event brought together researchers, scientists, engineers, and practitioners to exchange new ideas and experiences in the domain of intelligent computing theories with prospective applications in various engineering disciplines. These proceedings are divided into two volumes. Covering broad areas of information and decision sciences, with papers exploring both the theoretical and practical aspects of data-intensive computing, data mining, evolutionary computation, knowledge management and networks, sensor networks, signal processing, wireless networks, protocols and architectures, this volume is a valuable resource for postgraduate students in various engineering disciplines.
