Excerpt from Into the Highways and Hedges Before and since the days when Socrates found that it was impossible to live a quiet life, for that would be to disobey the deity, there have always been some souls who have counted it worth while to lose all else, if haply in the losing they might get nearer to the light from which they came. Their failures, their apparently hopeless mistakes, are often evident enough, yet the mistakes die, and the spirit which animates them lives. It would be dark, indeed, if the torches of those eager runners were to go out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Into the Highways and Hedges: Look inside the book: He saw very little of his girls as a rule, he had so many other things to think of (he was a great patron of art and letters, a dabbler in politics, and the most popular man in the county), but when he was with them he was charming, and petted them far more than was the fashion in those days. ...The girls had their meals in the schoolroom at the top of the house, with Miss Cripps, who, poor thing, had a dull enough time of it; and their world was quite distinct from their aunt's as a rule, though she occasionally invaded it, very much to their dismay. ...In the dead silence that followed, Meg's heart was beating wildly, she alone did not kneel; perhaps her education made any display of religious emotion more repugnant to her than to the rest of his audience; but her knees were shaking under her, and she turned white with the intensity of the awe with which she realised the presence of God.

Excerpt from Highways and Hedges: Or, Fifty Years of Western Methodism This was followed up by solicitations from my friends that I would prepare and publish an autobiography. After a good deal of hesitation I have yielded to that solicitation, and here is the result of my effort. I have given the names of those admitted on trial into the Ohio Conference from the year 1816 to the year 1866, a period of fifty years. I have also given the names and brief biographical notices of those of her members that have fallen in death during that period. This arrangement gives somewhat of a monotonous be ginning to the several chapters, but will be convenient for reference. Though I have expressed my views fully of the characteristics of my colleagues and presiding elders, and the many preachers who have been associated with me during the years of my pastorate and presiding eldership, yet I have been so fortunate in these associa tions, that there have been very few of them of whom I found it necessary to say aught but good. If my book shall meet the reasonable expectations of my friends, and above all if it shall be made a blessing to others after I shall have gone to join my comrades in the Church above, I shall, not have labored or prayed in vain. For America, reliance has been placed on Professor Max Farrand's Development of the United States and C. Chesterton's History of the United States, and for the lighter side of Puritanism, where the clash of armies and the wranglings of politicians and sectaries are not heard, Professor Dowden's Puritan and Angli can has met every need.
