The concept of the ISS was developed in 1972 by three Internationally renowned radio logists; Harold G. Jacobson M. D. , Ronald O. Murray M. D. , and Jack Edeiken M. D. Their hard work and dedication allowed their vision to become a reality when the first meeting of the Society was held in 1974. The ISS is an interdisciplinary society dedicated to the learning, understanding, and teaching of musculoskeletal disorders. From the beginning, the Society established itself as a premier society, and its members, all experts in their respective fields, continue to make significant contributions to the field of medicine. The sharing of knowledge and a feeling of camaraderie by the members has made this truly a unique society. The Book of Members is in part a historical compilation of information about the Society. The first edition was compiled by Friedrich W. Heuck, Dr. med. , and spanned the first fifteen years of the Society. Dr. Heuck's contribution to the first edition is immeasurable". In the book, Harold Jacobson M. D. presented his historical perspective of the beginnings of the Society and Dr. Heuck presented information of the years that followed. I have brought that information up to date in this edition, and have added new facts about the Society and its membership. The amount of information about each member of the Society is purposefully less than that which was presented in the first edition, as the Society has grown to 427 members and 20 Honorary members .

The International Skeletal Society is now fifteen years old and as measured in human terms has outgrown its childhood. During this time the ISS has earned worldwide respect and praise for successful work. The International Skeletal Society is an interdisciplinary working group concerned with skeletal diseases, their pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment at all ages. At the Annual Closed Meetings of the ISS prominent scientists representing many countries from all over the world gather to exchange ideas in the fields of radiology, pathology, orthopedic surgery, nephrology, and endocrinology. Follow ing these meetings Refresher Courses are offered for students, physicians in train ing, and interested collegues from the various medical specialities. The purpose of these courses is to present the latest developments in clinical practice and research with regard to skeletal diseases. The Society's internationally well-known journal "Skeletal Radiology", which is published by Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, adds in exchanging updated developments in the field of skeletal disorders. The hereby presented first Book of Members contains a record summarizing the most important milestones and events of the history of the International Skeletal Society up to 1987 in the form of short biographies regarding the members of the Society. The task of gathering all important informations for this book was accom plished by one of the members during his term as President of the ISS. The other one - honorary member - took upon himself the tasks related to publication.

This volume brings together the papers which 33 radiologists, chosen among the leading European experts, presented at the Halley Project 1996 Refresher Course. The project, which I promoted and co-ordinated, started out under the aegis of the European Association of Radiology in 1992 with the aim of fostering the advancement of Radiology in various countries of Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Rumania. Thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of distinguished colleagues from various countries in Western Europe and to the generosity of two sponsors, Bracco International and Schering A.G., it was possible to set up, in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. four Faculties of Experts in Uroradiology. Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, Chest Radiology and Skeletal Radiology. These four faculties then gave a refresher course on the four radiological subspecialities in the six nations mentioned above. The project was called Halley, after the famous comet, in a desire to express the idea of spreading Western radiological culture among Eastern radiologists who were visited in their own countries. In these 4 years. as project leader, I accompanied the four Faculties during their tour and was thus able to experience the various local situations, not only in radiological terms but also socially. thanks to the ever warm relationships among radiologists of different nationalities and of different ages who attended the courses.

This superbly illustrated book offers comprehensive and systematic coverage of the pitfalls that may arise during musculoskeletal imaging, whether as a consequence of the imaging technique itself or due to anatomical variants or particular aspects of disease. The first section is devoted to technique-specific artifacts encountered when using different imaging modalities and covers the entire range of advanced methods, including high-resolution ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. Advice is provided on correct imaging technique. In the second section, pitfalls in imaging interpretation that may occur during the imaging of trauma to various structures and of the diseases affecting these structures are described. Misleading imaging appearances in such pathologies as inflammatory arthritides, infections, metabolic bone lesions, congenital skeletal dysplasis, tumors and tumor-like conditions are highlighted, and normal variants are also identified. Pitfalls in Musculoskeletal Radiology will be an invaluable source of information for the practicing radiologist, facilitating recognition of pitfalls of all types and avoidance of diagnostic errors and misinterpretations, with their medicolegal implications.

We welcome the publication of this volume, which discusses the diagnosis of bone tumours with particular reference to children and adolescents. As founder members of the International Skeletal Society we are delighted to learn that the book had its inception at one of the Society's meetings. It reflects, moreover, the combined presentation of radiological and pathological diagnostic information which has been such a feature of the meetings of the International Skeletal Society. We commend it to all readers with an interest in tumours of the skeleton. Hubert A. Sissons Ronald O. Murray Preface The diagnosis of primary bone tumors is often difficult. There are several reasons for this. As primary bone tumors are rare in childhood, practitioners in a number of pediatric subspecialties are not familiar with them. The clinical symptoms and signs are often elusive, the biochemical investigations usually normal and the radio graphic features often uncharacteristic. Even the pathologist, who is the final step in arriving at the proper diagnosis and who has all the available clinical, biochemical and radiographic data, may encounter difficulties. A good tissue sample is the basis for microscopic investigation. However, bone tumors often show an extreme variety of structures which confuse even experienced bone pathologists. Therefore, histo pathologic analysis must take into account all available clinical, biochemical and radiographic data. The close cooperation of the pathologist with clinicians and, especially, radiologists is of the utmost importance.

This book describes and illustrates the normal and abnormal postoperative appearances that may be observed following common orthopaedic surgical procedures in patients with sports injuries. The majority of sports injuries comprise ligamentous, cartilage, and tendon injuries at and about the joints. While surgical repair techniques for such injuries have advanced immeasurably over recent years, it is essential that any postoperative abnormalities are recognized promptly. Therefore a key aim of Postoperative Imaging of Sports Injuries is to explain which imaging appearances are to be expected and which are not. The book is primarily organized according to the involved joints and covers procedures for shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, knee, and foot and ankle injuries. An additional chapter addresses articular cartilage repair techniques and their normal and abnormal imaging appearances. The authors are leading radiologists from Europe and North America who draw on their extensive experience. The book is copiously illustrated and readers will also have online access to ultrasound video clips.
