The Nouveau Roman writers have been actively involved in the theory as well as the practice of fiction, participating in a series of vigorous debates on issues such as the political significance of literature, formalism and structuralism, the status of the author, etc. This study discusses Robbe-Grillet, Sarraute, Simon, Butor and Ricardou, analysing both the interaction of their own theory and fiction and their reactions to the work of figures such as Sartre, Barthes, Lvi-Strauss, Sollers and Kristeva.

"But Vernier finds that the core of what he actually knows is useless unless he can spin around it a concentric web of larger suppositions, endowed with varying "degrees" of truth. Relying on his nephew's information, he writes Part Two of his manuscript as if it were being written by his nephew. Finally, in Part Three, the raw material of life overwhelms his delicate literary structure, thus exposing the impossibility of his obsession and the damaging effect this obsession has on both himself and those who surround him."--BOOK JACKET.

This lively and thought-provoking study approaches Tournier's writing via the concept of metaphor, seeing it not just as a particular technical device but as a dimension in the whole enterprise of writing. Metaphor itself is the subject of lively debate, and this is the first published study to investigate its application to Tournier's work in a systematic fashion. This method of analysis enables the author both to present some distinctive commentaries on certain Tournier fictions and to open up elements of a wider debate about the role of literature in society and the cognitive function of metaphor in general.

Are OECD countries becoming more knowledge-based? Are they embracing the information economy? To what extent are innovation, science, technology and economies becoming global? What are the new growth industries and occupations? With over 160 indicators, 60% of them new to this edition, the volume provides a comprehensive picture of countries’ performance in the areas of science, technology and industry. It uses an improved classification of technology and knowledge-intensive industries. New indicators address emerging policy issues: international mobility of human capital, relative innovative performance as measured by patent families, skills in the information economy, diffusion of the Internet and electronic commerce. Resources devoted to innovation in emerging areas such as biotechnology, environment, health and information and communication technologies are measured for the first time. A new section on the information economy relies on the latest data from official sources. With the essential findings presented in bullet points and methodological notes on indicators and data sources, this publication combines statistical rigour with easy access and readability. An electronic version makes individual sections, an elaborate data appendix and links to the databases readily available. The electronic version also gives users “clickable” access to the data used in charts and figures. In the last decade, the question of how trauma is remembered and narrated has become increasingly crucial in literary studies and in psychotherapy. Writing Wounds rethinks the relation between trauma, memory and narrative through readings of key fictional, autobiographical and "autofictional" texts by recent French women writers: Marie Cardinal, Chantal Chawaf, Hélène Cixous, Charlotte Delbo, Béatrice de Jurquet and Sarah Kofman. By drawing on and also interrogating recent theories of trauma, this study shows that trauma is inscribed in writing through recurring images of the body and of bodily wounding that mark the limits and possibilities of narrativisation. This book has a double aim: to offer new readings of texts by modern French women writers and to rethink the crucial question of how narratives of trauma are to be read. Writing Wounds will be of interest to researchers working on trauma, modern French literature, women's writing or "life-writing" as well as to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on trauma and narrative.
