This book is the fruit of a study group on perception and action that worked at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiP) of the University of Bielefeld, FRG in the academic year 1984-1985. We express our gratitude to the ZiF for hosting the group and for providing fmancial and organizational support for its scientific activities, including a meeting of the authors of the present volume that took place at the ZiF in July 1986. This is/ the study group's last common product, and it took considerable time to give the book its fmal shape. Most of the editing was done while one of us (0. N.) was a Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NlAS) during the academic year 1987-1988. Thanks are due to NIAS for its generous support. We also thank all our friends and colleagues who contributed to the book.
The Role of Eye Movements in Perceptual Processes

It has become a truism that the frozen optical diagram representation of vision is the worst possible picture of the way in which we visually interact with the environment. Even apart from our reaction to moving targets by pursuit movements, our visual behaviour can be said to be characterised by eye movements. We sample from our environment in a series of relatively brief fixations which move from one point to another in a series of extremely rapid jerks known as saccades. Many questions arising from this characteristic of vision are explored within this volume, including the question of how our visual world maintains its perceptual stability despite the drastic changes in input associated with these eye movements.
Sensorimotor Interactions in Space Perception and Action

This volume provides a unique sample of research and conceptual approaches to understanding the interactive nature of perceptual and motor processes. In addition to diverse views from experimental psychology, the reader will find contributions from biological cybernetics, neurology and ophthalmology. Starting with an introduction to the historical development of the problem, the first section is concerned with the contribution of efferent processes to visual space perception. Subsequent sections discuss different theoretical approaches to the interrelationship of space perception and action, phenomena and mechanisms of oculomotor and perceptual adaptation, as well as the development of perceptual-motor performance.

If you've ever been tricked by an optical illusion, you'll have some idea about just how clever the relationship between your eyes and your brain is. This book leads one through the intricacies of the subject and demystifying how we see.

In the past few years, there has been an explosion of eye movement research in cognitive science and neuroscience. The Oxford Handbook of Eye Movements provides the first comprehensive review of the entire field of eye movement research. This book is the definitive reference work in this field.
Perception and Control of Self-motion
Author | : Rik Warren |
Publisher | : Psychology Press |
Total Pages | : 676 |

This book presents studies of self-motion by an international group of basic and applied researchers including biologists, psychologists, comparative physiologists, kinesiologists, aerospace and control engineers, physicians, and physicists. Academia is well represented and accounts for most of the applied research offered. Basic theoretical research is further represented by private research companies and also by government laboratories on both sides of the Atlantic. Researchers and students of biology, psychology, physiology, kinesiology, engineering, and physics who have an interest in self-motion -- whether it be underwater, in space, or on solid ground -- will find this volume of interest. Handbook of Perception and Action: Perception
Author | : Wolfgang Prinz |
Publisher | : Academic Press |
Total Pages | : 474 |
Release | : 1995 |
Genre | : Medical |
ISBN | : 0125161611 |
This volume combines the classical fields of perception research with the major theoretical attitudes of today's research, distinguishing between experience- versus performance-related approaches, transformational versus interactional approaches, and approaches that rely on the processing versus discovery of information. Perception is separated into two parts. The first part deals with basic processes and mechanisms, and discusses early vision and later, yet still basic, vision. The second covers complex achievements with accounts of perceptual constancies and the perception of patterns, objects, events, and actions.
