Excerpt from Zip-the Zip-Code Insulation Program (Version 1. 0) Economic Insulation Levels for New and Existing Houses by Three-Digit Zip Code: Users Guide and References Manual The zip computer program was developed to support the calculations and data base used to estimate the economic levels of insulation published in the u.s. Department of Energy's Insulation Fact Sheet (doe/ge-0180, Office of Scientific and Technical Information, p.o. Box 62, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, This program allows individual users to estimate economic levels of insulation for their house, based on local climate data, local prices for energy and insulation, and the type and estimated efficiency of its heating and cooling system. 'while the current program is limited to calculating economic insulation levels for attic floors, exterior walls, floors over crawlspaces, and crawlspace and basement walls, it is anticipated that this will be expanded to include other components, such as windows water heaters, and duct work in unconditioned spaces. Programmatic direction of this project and the doe Insulation Fact Sheet has been provided by David mcelroy of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
