Between the religious massacres, conflicts and martyrdoms that characterised much of Reformation Europe, there seems little room for a consideration of the concept of moderation. Yet it was precisely because of this extremism that many Europeans, both individuals and regimes, were forced into positions of moderation as they found themselves caught in the confessional crossfire. This is not to suggest that such people refused to take sides, but rather that they were unwilling or unable to conform fully to emerging confessional orthodoxies. By conducting an investigation into the idea of 'moderation', this volume raises intriguing concepts and offers a fuller understanding of the pressures that shaped the confessional landscape of Reformation Europe. A number of essays present case studies examining 'moderates' who existed uneasily in the space between coercion and persuasion in Britain, France and the Holy Roman Empire. Others look more broadly at local and national attempts at conciliation, and at the way the rhetoric of moderation was manipulated during confessional conflict. These are all drawn together with a substantial introduction and analytical conclusion, which not only tie the volume together, but which also pose wider conceptual and methodological questions about the meaning of moderation.

Shred Wallaces Oblivion, Pynchons V, Leyners Sugar Frosted Nutsack* and Ouredniks Instant Propice. Gather in a 2 Gallon Ziploc Brand Freezer Bag. Shake, half-bake. And heres this subtly crusted bilingual English/French-Canadian novel entitled Kissing Number. Keywords? Sure! Pseudo-thermodynamics. Limerence. High finance as an art form. Cuban cattlehead refrigerators. Why you, the well-advised, polymath reader ought to spend hard-earned money on this book on the sole basis of self-proclaimed cross-references and a few keywords is beyond reason. To tell you the truth, youre currently holding a pure akratic object in your hands, yet reasonably priced at single-digit dollars and 99 cents. Good luck with that one. * This novel by Leyner isnt yet published as I go to press, the influence here being non-causal, making the two books entangled in a quantum mechanical sense. Cant wait to see how The Sugar Frosted Nutsack turns out as it will instantly determine the opposite content of KN. Exciting!!! Later note: Leyners book just came out a minute ago. Pure genius. Well, so much for this book! Put it back on the shelf, now.

Ludwik Dembinski Richard O'Regan Editor Chairman, Editorial Committee The present volume is a complete revision of International Geneva 1985 which was published on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the United Na tions and which was generally received as a useful and informative contribution to the essential reference works on Geneva. Geneva, although a relatively small city with no more than 350,000 inhabi tants, probably has a higher concentration of international organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, than any other location in the world. There is a hectic international life with an unceasing round of conferences, meetings and negotiations on virtually the entire spectrum of human activity and most fields of international co-operation. The aim of the present publication is to provide all those directly involved or interested in international activities and international organizations with an up to-date guide that can help them find their way through the labyrinth of interna tional institutions and issues.
