This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) sets forth criteria for the selection, inspection, retread and repair of worn civil aircraft tires, and the means to verify that the retreaded tire is suitable for continued service. This document is applicable to both bias ply and radial aircraft tires qualified subsequent to the adoption of this document. Advanced Non-Destructive (NDT) Aircraft Tire Inspection Systems were evaluated and compared with the air needle inspection technique normally used to qualify air carrier aircraft tires for repair, retread, and return to service. The advanced NDT inspection systems considered were: the air needle buffing, holographic, pulse-echo ultrasound, and x-ray types. A description of the equipment, inspection procedure, typical visual displays, and analysis technique is included for each inspection system. A discussion of equipment state-of-art, tradeoffs, operator skills, required manning, and inspection rates is provided. Basic equipment, installation, and maintenance costs are provided. The effectiveness of the inspection systems in detecting, identifying type and size, and locating the position of defects is reported for a group of four old defective tires and four new tires with built-in defects which were inspected by all evaluated systems. Some recent or potential advances in state-of-art are discussed. (Author).

This report describes the procedures of analysis and dynamometer testing that were used to develop data and supporting technology for improving the maintenance and continued airworthiness of civil aircraft tires. As related to the inspection, retread and repair of aircraft tires under Advisory Circular AC 145-41, improved criteria which characterize typical tire operating environments and opening scenarios (associated with long range, medium range, and short haul transport airplanes) are defined. Based upon these criteria and scenarios which include tire loading, temperature, and roll distances, means to assess tire fatigue life were developed. Results of this effort may be used for the identification of in-service acceptance criteria and prescribed retread limits.
