Travelling is one of the most fascinating phenomena that has inspired writers and scholars from Antiquity to our postmodern age. The father of history, Herodotus, was also a traveller, whose Histories can easily be considered a travel account. The first volume of this book is dedicated to the period starting from Herodotus himself until the end of the Middle Ages with focus on the Balkans, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic world, and South-Eastern Europe. Research on travellers who connected civilizations; manuscript and literary traditions; musicology; geography; flora and fauna as reflected in travel accounts, are all part of this thought-provoking collected volume dedicated to detailed aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the end of the sixteenth century. The second volume of this book is dedicated to the period between Early Modernity and today, including modern receptions of travelling in historiography and literature. South-Eastern Europe and Serbia; the Chinese, Ottoman, and British perception of travelling; pilgrimages to the Holy land and other sacred sites; Serbian, Arabic, and English literature; legal history and travelling, and other engaging topics are all part of the second volume dedicated to aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the contemporary era.

The publication of key voyaging manuscripts has contributed to the flourishing of enduring and prolific worldwide scholarship across numerous fields. These navigators and their texts were instrumental in spurring on further exploration, annexation and ultimately colonisation of the pacific territories in the space of only a few decades. This series will present new sources and primary texts in English, paving the way for postcolonial critical approaches in which the reporting, writing, rewriting and translating of Empire and the ‘Other’ takes precedence over the safeguarding of master narratives. Each of the volumes contains an introduction that sets out the context in which these voyages took place and extensive annotations clarify and explain the original texts. The translated accounts of voyages undertaken by foreign vessels abounded in an era when they encouraged not only competitive geopolitical initiatives but also commercial enterprises throughout Europe, resulting in a voluminous textual corpus. However, French merchant-seaman Etienne Marchand’s journal of his voyage round the world in 1790-1792, encompassing an important visit to the Marquesas Archipelago during his first crossing of the Pacific, remained unpublished until 2005 and has only now been made available in English. The second volume of this series comprises an annotated translation in English of this document.

As the centre of world economic development has shifted towards Asia over the last two decades, many Asian countries have witnessed rapid growth in economic and business operations. In light of these recent changes, accounting has played a significant role in assisting economic transition and advancement in Asian countries. However, although the general trend over recent decades towards convergence in financial reporting standards and practices has dramatically improved the comparability of accounting information, considerable variances remain in practices between countries. This Handbook therefore provides an up-to-date review of contemporary accountancy across Asia, illustrating how standards have been reshaped to accommodate the needs of economic and social trends. As well as providing an overview of standards in the larger Asian economies of China, India and Japan, contributions to the Handbook also include studies of countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia and Mongolia. In particular, this Handbook analyses: financial accounting and reporting management accounting auditing and accounting professionalization governmental and public-sector accounting accounting education accounting development in Asian emerging economies The Routledge Handbook of Accounting in Asia offers students, academics, regulators and practitioners an essential reference guide to the current scholarship and practice in the field of accountancy in Asia.
