Excerpt from Inscriptions in the Early Gravestones on the Old New England Town Burying Ground Fairton It is but natural our thoughts turn toward those who peopled this part of the county, who they were, and from whence they came. Few, however, of the first to settle within the present boundaries of the county were buried in this early grave yard. Following the custom of the time they were laid at rest in some favored spot about their habitations, where in unmarked and long forgotten graves, their dust has mingled with the earth they once trod, and we may not find them. Some of their descendants, and settlers of a later date, found at last lodgement about the church in which they had worshipped, and congregations of the dead slept without the walls. Excerpt from Inscriptions From the Ancient Gravestones of Acworth, N. H: A Transcript of the Records in the Old Cemetery of That Town Settled in 1769 Principally by Descendants of the Scotch-Irish Colony of Londonderry, N. H The town was first settled in 1767 by three young men from Connecticut, William Keyes, Joseph Chatterton and Samuel Smith, they all being from Ashford or vicinity, the first named being accompanied by his wife and an infanta few months old. They were followed by comparatively few from Connecticut, but their posterity were numerous. The settlers in the following years came largely from London derry, New Boston and Weare, and surrounding towns, while several came from Massachusetts. As the town grew, emigration commenced, - to Vermont, New York state and Ohio, so that today the descendants of this Hill Town of New Hampshire have representatives in all the West and indirectly to the Pacific Ocean. The first mention of a cemetery or burying ground is that of the Common, (al though doubtless many were buried ou private grounds.) In 1776 a burying ground was selected, and Lieut. James Rogers, one of the selectmen for that year, was the first person buried there. To this yard an addition was made in 1834. From this old yard, so called, the following inscriptions are made. The part taken in the War of the Revolution is remarkable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tombstone Inscriptions in the Old Presbyterian Burying Ground at Greenwich, New Jersey: With a Historical Sketch The principal object of this publication is to preserve in convenient form the names, dates and epitaphs found on the tombstones of former residents of Greenwich who lie buried in the grave yard, where once stood the old Presbyterian meeting-house by the great street, which beginning at the riverside, some two miles distant, leads to this hallowed ground. This highway has been in constant use for more than two hundred years, Up and down this ancient road have passed and repassed the men and women who have made the town their home since the arrival of the Qua ker colonists and the Connecticut settlers more than two centuries ago. Here, at the Head of Greenwich was built the early church, small, as was their numbers at first, but as the congregation increased in wealth and standing, replaced by a substantial even elegant structure of brick, which standing for a century, was for many years the centre of religious activity of the county.
