Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global health epidemic that has deleterious consequences for the individuals with the brain injury, their families, and society. The development and validation of effective treatments is imperative. The current study was inspired by Ylvisaker's collaborative intervention approach with individuals with TBI and draws on a line of work by Duff and colleagues (e.g., Duff et al., 2006; Gupta et al., 2011) documenting patterns of spared and impaired learning abilities in individuals with various types focal brain damage (e.g., hippocampus) and selective neuropsychological impairment (e.g., declarative memory) using a collaborative referencing paradigm. This study extends this line of work by examining the ability of individuals with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury to develop and use referential labels for novel picture cards across repeated interactions with a familiar partner as they complete a collaborative referencing task. Five TBI participant pairs (an individuals with TBI and their partner) and five healthy comparison pairs completed 24 trials (6 trials in each of 4 sessions) of the collaborative referencing task across two days. As a group, the performance of four of the five TBI pairs did not differ from healthy comparison pairs on the primary dependent variables of card placement accuracy, time to complete each trial, and reduction in communicative resources across trials. That is, despite having TBI, these individuals were able to develop and use unique and concise labels to reference the novel cards in collaboration with a familiar partner. The fifth TBI participant pair (3591) differed from the other TBI and healthy comparison pair on both quantitative and qualitative measures.

Brain Injury not only affects its victim, but those around them. In many cases, relatives are often overlooked despite facing many obstacles accepting and adjusting to a new way of life. Family Experience of Brain Injury showcases a unique collaboration between relatives of brain injured individuals and professionals from the field of neurorehabilitation. Family members from all different viewpoints tell their story and how the brain injury of a loved one has affected them. This book provides a space for those hidden and marginalised voices, the people who are in for the long haul, often dismissed by services and left to cope in isolation. By combining expert commentary with real life experiences, this book points towards sources of support, normalises the experience and provides a context for understanding the grief and losses of family members. Not only will the hard-earnt knowledge and wisdom evident in this book help educate health and social care staff, it highlights how love, commitment, hope and perseverance, against a seemingly unbearable grief, can remain. It is essential reading for individuals and families touched by brain injury and will give multi-disciplinary professionals, such as medics, nurses, psychologists, therapists, social workers, rehabilitation practitioners and clinical supervisors, a greater understanding of their role in helping the affected family.

Management of Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury is an up-to-the-minute, comprehensive, and useful text designed to support busy physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals working with persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families. Understanding and improving outcomes after TBI requires consideration of the effects of biomechanical forces on the brain and the interactions between the injury, the person experiencing it, and the psychosocial context in which TBI and its consequences occur. A multidisciplinary approach to the management of persons with TBI therefore is essential. Accordingly, this book presents and synthesizes the work of internationally recognized brain injury clinicians, scientists, and educators who were selected by a team of editors with backgrounds in psychiatry, neurology, psychology, and physiatry. This broad range of perspectives enhances understanding and provides nuanced yet practical information on the neuropsychiatric management of persons with TBI. Evidence-informed, concise, and clinically rich, Management of Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury will be of enormous value to health care providers grappling with the neurological and mental health consequences of this widespread public health problem.
