The Handbook of Data Structures and Applications was first published over a decade ago. This second edition aims to update the first by focusing on areas of research in data structures that have seen significant progress. While the discipline of data structures has not matured as rapidly as other areas of computer science, the book aims to update those areas that have seen advances. Retaining the seven-part structure of the first edition, the handbook begins with a review of introductory material, followed by a discussion of well-known classes of data structures, Priority Queues, Dictionary Structures, and Multidimensional structures. The editors next analyze miscellaneous data structures, which are well-known structures that elude easy classification. The book then addresses mechanisms and tools that were developed to facilitate the use of data structures in real programs. It concludes with an examination of the applications of data structures. Four new chapters have been added on Bloom Filters, Binary Decision Diagrams, Data Structures for Cheminformatics, and Data Structures for Big Data Stores, and updates have been made to other chapters that appeared in the first edition. The Handbook is invaluable for suggesting new ideas for research in data structures, and for revealing application contexts in which they can be deployed. Practitioners devising algorithms will gain insight into organizing data, allowing them to solve algorithmic problems more efficiently.

The book ‘Data Intensive Computing Applications for Big Data’ discusses the technical concepts of big data, data intensive computing through machine learning, soft computing and parallel computing paradigms. It brings together researchers to report their latest results or progress in the development of the above mentioned areas. Since there are few books on this specific subject, the editors aim to provide a common platform for researchers working in this area to exhibit their novel findings. The book is intended as a reference work for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, as well as multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research workers and scientists on the subjects of big data and cloud/parallel and distributed computing, and explains didactically many of the core concepts of these approaches for practical applications. It is organized into 24 chapters providing a comprehensive overview of big data analysis using parallel computing and addresses the complete data science workflow in the cloud, as well as dealing with privacy issues and the challenges faced in a data-intensive cloud computing environment. The book explores both fundamental and high-level concepts, and will serve as a manual for those in the industry, while also helping beginners to understand the basic and advanced aspects of big data and cloud computing.

Biotechnology has been labelled as one of the key technologies of the last two decades of the 20th Century, offering boundless solutions to problems ranging from food and agricultural production to pharmaceutical and medical applications, as well as environmental and bioremediation problems. Biological processes, however, are complex and the prevailing mechanisms are either unknown or poorly understood. This means that adequate techniques for data acquisition and analysis, leading to appropriate modeling and simulation packages that can be superimposed on the engineering principles, need to be routine tools for future biotechnologists. The present volume presents a masterly summary of the most recent work in the field, covering: instrumentation systems; enzyme technology; environmental biotechnology; food applications; and metabolic engineering.
