New times have fueled renewed efforts to control--if not eliminate--the pollution associated with industrial land uses. Growing public concern for the environment, coupled with industry's need to comply with new legislation at all levels of government, has driven scientific and engineering advances in the understanding of pollution and ways to control it. The planner's role in this effort is critical. This report examines industrial performance standards planners can use to prevent the pollution caused by high-tech industries such as plastics, electronics, and biotechnology. The report suggests industrial performance standards for pollution prevention and uses case studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed standards.
