This report provides an evaluation of ten fleet moorings located inshore at the island of Bermuda and is based on the underwater inspection of these moorings conducted by UCT-1 divers and CHESDIV engineering support personnel during the period 8-15 July 1981. The results of this investigation revealed that only one of the ten moorings inspected is considered safe for utilization by fleet units within the constraints of rated moorings loads. Comments concerning the specific condition of each mooring inspected are included as well as recommendations for mooring overhaul or replacement.

CHESNAVFACENGCOM designated an Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) tp provide inspection planning and on-site technical direction for the underwater inspection of fleet moorings located at the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Earle, New Jersey. The actual underwater portion of the inspection was performed by divers of Underwater Construction Team One (UCT 1). A total of three fleet moorings are currently operated and maintained by NWS Earle. The purpose of the mooring inspections is to determine the general physical condition of the buoys and chain assemblies and, when possible, to verify or update existing as-built and maintenance records. Divers inspect only a portion of the submerged buoy hull and chain assemblies in order to compile a general description of the mooring's condition. The existence of fairly consistent measurements during his inspection provides a good indication of the mooring's overall condition.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station (NUWES), Keyport, WA has the requirement for six fleet moorings at Indian Island, WA to secure YC and YFN ammunition barges. In April 1982, CHESNAVFACENGCOM was tasked to design and install the remaining three moorings. As part of this effort, CHESNAVFACENGCOM conducted an underwater diver inspection of the three existing moorings. We determined that mooring number 1 had been displaced approximately 140 feet from its installed location.

This report contains the results of the inspection of three fleet moorings located within the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, SC. Of the three moorings inspected, the Mediterranean Mooring, ARDM-2, and the Auxiliary Mooring's chain were found to be in satisfactory condition, while the Auxiliary Mooring's Buoy was found to be in poor condition. Only 8 of the 13 legs of the ARDM-2 were inspected. The Auxiliary Mooring's Buoy should be removed from the water before it sinks. Due to measurements slightly greater than 80% of original wire diameter, it is recommended that legs C, J, and K be changed out during the next scheduled maintenance period. Keywords: Fleet moorings.

As part of COMNAVFACENGCOM's Fleet Mooring Maintenance (FMM) Program, CHESNAVFACENGCOM has been assigned the responsibility for the conduct of underwater inspections of fleet moorings worldwide. This plan provides guidelines for the underwater inspection of the three fleet moorings operated and maintained by the Naval Weapons Station Charleston, South Carolina. This inspection was scheduled to occur in early April 1983. CHESNAVFACENGCOM has designated an Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) to provide on site technical guidance to the Underwater Construction Team One (UCT-ONE) divers who will actually perform the underwater portion of the inspection. In addition, the EIC will prepare the post-inspection report which will include the results of the inspection and recommendations for required maintenance actions.
