This book gives an introduction to index theory for symplectic matrix paths and its iteration theory, as well as applications to periodic solution problems of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The applications of these concepts yield new approaches to some outstanding problems. Particular attention is given to the minimal period solution problem of Hamiltonian systems and the existence of infinitely many periodic points of the Poincaré map of Lagrangian systems on tori.

The aim of the symposium was to provide a forum for presenting and discussing recent developments and trends in Reaction-diffusion Equations and to promote scientific exchanges among mathematicians in China and in Japan, especially for the younger generation. The topics discussed were: Layer dynamics, Traveling wave solutions and its stability, Equilibrium solutions and its limit behavior (stability), Bifurcation phenomena, Computational solutions, and Infinite dimensional dynamical system.

This is an account of the proceedings of a very successful symposium of Transcendental Number Theory held in Durham in 1986. Most of the leading international specialists were present and the lectures reflected the great advances that have taken place in this area. The papers cover all the main branches of the subject, and include not only definitive research but valuable survey articles.

Many of the modern variational problems of topology arise in different but overlapping fields of scientific study: mechanics, physics and mathematics. In this work, Professor Fomenko offers a concise and clear explanation of some of these problems (both solved and unsolved), using current methods of analytical topology. His book falls into three interrelated sections. The first gives an elementary introduction to some of the most important concepts of topology used in modern physics and mechanics: homology and cohomology, and fibration. The second investigates the significant role of Morse theory in modern aspects of the topology of smooth manifolds, particularly those of three and four dimensions. The third discusses minimal surfaces and harmonic mappings, and presents a number of classic physical experiments that lie at the foundations of modern understanding of multidimensional variational calculus. The author's skilful exposition of these topics and his own graphic illustrations give an unusual motivation to the theory expounded, and his work is recommended reading for specialists and non-specialists alike, involved in the fields of physics and mathematics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
