The contents of this volume originate from the joint Inclusion Phenomenal Cyclodextrins Symposium held at Lancaster in July 1986. Consisting of 50 extended ab stracts and 21 original contributions, the reader will find an up-to-date survey of the current state of research into, and applications of, inclusion compounds. Topics covered range from cyclodextrin complexes and their use as media for selective chemical reagents and their applications in chromatography and in the pharmaceutical and agricultural areas; the synthesis of new hosts, particularly those containing hydrophobic cavities; the characterisation of inclusion compounds using crystallographic and spectroscopic techniques; the use of inclusion com pounds as enzyme models; macrocyclic complexes and ionophores; to intercalates and zeolites. The Symposium was extremely successful, being attended by some 250 delegates drawn from 23 nations. It is hoped that the reader will recapture the flavour of the meeting from reading this volume. xi Journal of Inclusion Phenomena 5 (1987), 1-2. 1 © 1987 by D. Reidel Publishing Company. Preface The joint meeting comprlslng the 4th International Symposium on Inclusion Phenomena and the 3rd International Symposium on Cyclodextrins was held on 20 - 25 July, 1986 at the University of Lancaster, Great Britain, and followed on from the previous joint meeting held in Tokyo in July, 1984. The meeting was sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Designed for advanced undergraduate students, Physical Properties of Materials, Second Edition establishes the principles that control the optical, thermal, electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of materials. Using an atomic and molecular approach, this introduction to materials science offers students a wide-ranging survey of the field and a basis to understand future materials. The author incorporates comments on applications of materials science, extensive references to the contemporary and classic literature, and problems at the end of each chapter. In addition, unique tutorials allow students to apply the principles to understand applications, such as photocopying, magnetic devices, fiber optics, and more. This fully revised and updated second edition presents a discussion of materials sustainability, a description of crystalline structures, and discussion of current and recent developments, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanocomposites, magnetocaloric effect, and spintronics. Along with a new capstone tutorial on the materials science of cymbals, this edition contains more than 60 new end-of-chapter problems, bringing the total to 300 problems. Web Resource The book’s companion website (www.physicalpropertiesofmaterials.com) provides updates to the further reading sections, links to relevant movies and podcasts for each chapter, video demonstrations, and additional problems. It also offers sources of demonstration materials for lectures and PowerPoint slides of figures from the book. More information can be found on a recent press release describing the book and the website.

Zeolites and related molecular sieves have quickly become important pathways to new opportunities in the fields of oil processing and petrochemical synthesis. The signs of intense activity in both industry and academia are evident: burgeoning papers and patent applications; increasing numbers of industrial zeolite-based processes and their rapid expansion into organic chemicals manufacturing; recent progress in zeolite accessibility range, matrix behaviour, lattice components and satellite structures; and the recognition that zeolites, which are stable and can be regenerated, may be incorporated into new, environmentally friendly processes. This volume offers a thorough, up-to-date introduction to zeolites and such related materials as crystalline aluminium phosphates and clays. Its 16 chapters, each written by specialists, provide detailed treatments of zeolite theory (including a review of major developments), zeolite laboratory and research practice, and zeolite industry applications. Students and individuals entering the field will find Introduction to Zeolite Science and Practice a thorough guidebook. Experienced researchers will appreciate its in-depth coverage of the zeolite spectrum, including the latest views on zeolite structure, characterization and applications.

The rapid growth of interest in inclusion chemistry was highlighted recently by the award of the 1987 Nobel prize for chemistry to Professors D.J. Cram, J.-M. Lehn, and C.J. Pedersen. The principal aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the field of inclusion chemistry. In-depth coverage of subjects has been achieved by inviting the leading international authorities to write on their particular fields of interest. Their contributions include detailed descriptions of the design, synthesis and structure of organic host molecules, molecular recognition and complexation, and host-guest interaction. Previously underdeveloped subjects are given broad coverage, with separate chapters relating to calixarene chemistry and inclusion mechanisms, acyclic diol hosts, cyclophanes, and lariat ethers. Inclusion Compounds Volume 5 is complete in itself as a reference work on inorganic and physical aspects of inclusion phenomena. This book will be of interest and use to all those concerned with the fundamental study of inclusion compounds, as well as those interested in the applications of such complexes in the analytical, biochemical and industrial fields.

Containing the very latest information on all aspects of enthalpy and internal energy as related to fluids, this book brings all the information into one authoritative survey in this well-defined field of chemical thermodynamics. Written by acknowledged experts in their respective fields, each of the 26 chapters covers theory, experimental methods and techniques and results for all types of liquids and vapours. These properties are important in all branches of pure and applied thermodynamics and this vital source is an important contribution to the subject hopefully also providing key pointers for cross-fertilization between sub-areas.
