Excerpt from In the Heart of the Meadow: And Other Poems The age in which we live is a practical one and not gleaming with poetic fancies. In England to-day there are various poets, but none that could be placed in the rank of Tennyson, Byron or Browning. In the United States, amid the numbers who write poetry, there cannot be found any equal to Longfellow, Whittier, Bryant or Poe. Canadian poetry has been well sustained during the past twenty-five years by a Roberts, a Carman, a Campbell, a Scott, a Service, a Dr. Drummond, and many others, and though the population of the Republic to the south of us is ten times that of Canada it certainly has not to-day ten times as many inspired singers. This volume, "In the Heart of the Meadow," is, I understand, Mr. O'Hagan's fourth published book of verse. Of the merits of the poems it is only necessary to say that while most of the poetry of our day seems to have buried itself in obscurity, Mr. O'Hagan's poems are easily understood and come freely from the thought and imagination. "His poems are timeless, lyrical songs that transcend the dark forces of our society and call for a deeper understanding of our values. Becoming familiar again with old poems by a gifted master is like reliving the days when poetry truly came from the heart to ravish and define who we are." --Bloomsbury Review "These exquisite poems are so well paced that nothing ever seems forced or misplaced." --Library Journal "[Everwine] presents us with poetry in which each moment is recorded, laid bare, and sanctified, which is to say the poems posses a quality one finds only in the greatest poetry." --Ploughshares

The Bird is Her Reason There are some bodies that emerge into desire as a god rises from the sea, emotion and memory hang like dripping clothes—this want is like entering that heated red on the mouth of a Delacroix lion, stalwart, always that red which makes my teeth ache and my skin feel a hand that has never touched me, the tree groaning outside becomes a man who knocks on my bedroom window, edge of red on gold fur, the horse, the wild flip of its head, the rake of claws across its back, the unfocussed, swallowed eye. Rare High Meadow of Which I Might Dream is a book haunted by the afterlife of medieval theology and literature yet grounded in distinctly modern quandaries of desire. Connie Voisine’s female speakers reverberate with notes of Marie de France’s tragic heroines, but whereas Marie’s poems are places where women’s longings quickly bloom and die in captivity—in towers and dungeons—Voisine uses narrative to suspend the movement of storytelling. For Voisine, poems are occasions for philosophical wanderings, extended lyrics that revolve around the binding and unbinding of desire, with lonely speakers struggling with the impetus of wanting as well as the necessity of a love affair’s end. With fluency, intelligence, and deeply felt emotional acuity, Rare High Meadow of Which I Might Dream navigates the heady intersection of obsessive love and searing loss. Praise for Cathedral of the North “Voisine’s poetry is wholly unsentimental, tactile, and filled with unexpected beauty. She is political in the best sense. . . . A dazzling, brave, and surprising first book.”—Denise Duhamel, Ploughshares

This is a captivating collection of Canadian poetry by Arthur Weir. Born in Montreal, Weir started writing poetry at a very young age. His initial attempt at poetry was when he wrote it for his school friends. Weir was regarded as one of the youngest sonneteers of his time. He published two volumes of poetry that earned him the position of a poet. The Snowflake, and Other Poems, appeared in 1896 and was his third volume. It contains some of his best-known verses, such as The Snowflake, To Scotland, Alladin's Lamp, etc. Arthur Weir used a charming style of writing in his poems, and they were always delightful and easy to follow. He preferred to be realistic and simple, rather than odd, dramatic, and complex.
