Sexual violence is a widespread public health issue and the risk of victimization is heightened on college campuses. Research shows that approximately 1 in 5 students experience at least one instance of sexual violence after entering college, and 34.6% of female students are sexually assaulted by their senior year (Mellins et al., 2017). For women, surviving sexual violence is the most common precursor to post-traumatic stress disorder (Narendran et al., 2019). In addition, the first three months after an assault are the most crucial to one's recovery (Dworkin et al., 2021). The goal of this capstone was to develop recommendations for curriculum about trauma-informed care that could be utilized by college law enforcement when interacting with students that have experienced sexual violence. Qualitative key informant interviews were conducted with four participants who had long-term experience working in sexual violence prevention and education, and law enforcement. Data was analyzed for key themes and recurring concepts that could guide the recommendations for curriculum. The major themes that emerged were as follows: 1) understanding the impacts of trauma, 2) empowering survivors to regain power and control, 3) barriers to implementing trauma-informed care, and 4) facilitators to implementing trauma-informed care. These findings highlight the need for college law enforcement to understand the adverse physical and psychological effects of sexual violence, learn how they can empower survivors and help reinstate their autonomy, and what factors contribute to effectively implementing trauma-informed care practices in response to campus sexual violence. It is fundamental that college law enforcement officers better understand how to engage with students who have been subjected to sexual violence in order to best support them, and avoid re-traumatization and further victimization in the process.
