This book analyses he implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in the light of state practices of China and Japan. The special character of the book can be found in its structure of comparative analysis of the practices of China and Japan in each part. The focus is on historical aspects (Part I), implementation of the UNCLOS (Part II), navigation (Part III), mid-ocean archipelagos (Part IV), the marine environment (Part V), and dispute settlement (Part VI). By taking this approach, the book elucidates a variety of aspects of history, difficulties, problems, and controversies arising from the implementation of the UNCLOS by the two nations. Furthermore, contributors from China and Japan tend to show different perspectives on the UNCLOS, which, by clarifying the need for further debate, are expected to contribute to the continuing cooperation between the academics of the two states.

This Study was prepared by the Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority to provide a summary of the International Workshop on Further Consideration of the Implementation of Article 82 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (the Convention), which was held in Beijing, China, from 26 to 30 November 2012 (Beijing Workshop), in collaboration with the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA). The Workshop aimed to draw up recommendations for Article 82 implementation guidelines and the outline of a model Article 82 agreement between the ISA and an outer continental shelf (OCS) State for receiving payments and contributions. The workshop also considered the framework, process and criteria for the equitable distribution by the Authority of payments and contributions. These recommendations are intended to form the basis for further consideration of the issues associated with the implementation of Article 82 by the relevant organs of the Authority in 2013 and beyond.

It also includes an extensive subject index to Volumes I through VI of the series, consolidated tables of cases and treaties, in addition to the one fisheries agreement specifically implementing the Convention. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982: A Commentary is a collection of commentaries based almost entirely on the formal and informal documentation the Convention. Each volume is written with the personal knowledge of the editors, many of whom were principal negotiators or UN personnel who participated in the conference.
