Computational collective intelligence (CCI) is most often understood as a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) dealing with soft computing methods that enable group decisions to be made or knowledge to be processed among autonomous units acting in distributed environments. The needs for CCI techniques and tools have grown signi- cantly recently as many information systems work in distributed environments and use distributed resources. Web-based systems, social networks and multi-agent systems very often need these tools for working out consistent knowledge states, resolving conflicts and making decisions. Therefore, CCI is of great importance for today’s and future distributed systems. Methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of computational collective int- ligence, such as group decision making, collective action coordination, and knowledge integration, are considered as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collabo- tion and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural). The application of multiple computational intelligence technologies such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural systems, consensus theory, etc. , can support human and other collective intelligence and create new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial s- tems.

Working One-to-One with Students is written for Higher Education academics, adjuncts, teaching assistants and research students who are looking for guidance inside and outside the classroom. This book is a jargon-free, practical guide to improving one-to-one teaching, covering a wide range of teaching contexts, including mentoring students and staff, supervising dissertations and how to approach informal meetings outside of lectures. Written in an engaging, accessible style and grounded in experience, this book offers a combination of practical advice backed by relevant learning theory. Featuring a wealth of case studies and useful resources, the book covers areas including: Supporting students; Encouraging independent learning; Mentoring coaching and personal tutoring; Developing peer groups and buddying programs; Dealing with diversity, difficult students and ethical dilemmas; supervising the undergraduate dissertation. Supervising postgraduates in the arts, social sciences and sciences. This book is a short, snappy, practical guide that covers this key element of a lecturer's work. In the spirit of the series (KEY GUIDES FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING in HIGHER EDUCATION) this book covers relevant theory that effectively informs practice.

This book contains the collection of full papers accepted at the 11th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS 2009), organized by the Ins- tute for Systems and Technologies of Information Control and Communication (INSTICC) in cooperation with the Association for Advancement of Artificial Intel- gence (AAAI) and ACM SIGMIS (SIG on Management Information Systems), and technically co-sponsored by the Japanese IEICE SWIM (SIG on Software Interprise Modeling) and the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC). ICEIS 2009 was held in Milan, Italy. This conference has grown to become a - jor point of contact between research scientists, engineers and practitioners in the area of business applications of information systems. This year, five simultaneous tracks were held, covering different aspects related to enterprise computing, including: “- tabases and Information Systems Integration,” “Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Systems,” “Information Systems Analysis and Specification,” “Software Agents and Internet Computing” and “Human–Computer Interaction”. All tracks describe research work that is often oriented toward real-world applications and hi- light the benefits of information systems and technology for industry and services, thus making a bridge between academia and enterprise. ICEIS 2009 received 644 paper submissions from 70 countries in all continents; 81 papers were published and presented as full papers, i.e., completed research work (8 pages/30-minute oral presentation). Additional papers accepted at ICEIS, including short papers and posters, were published in the regular conference proceedings.

Endoscopy is firmly established as a major technology for investigation and therapy in a wide range of disciplines. The field of otolaryngology or head and neck surgery owes its existence to the very special difficulties of examining the dark recesses of the head and neck. Therefore, this field has been at the forefront of developing endoscopic techniques for use in this anatomic area. While rhinologists have been quick to embrace the endoscope in the management of sinus disorders, otologists and skull base surgeons have been less than enthusiastic despite the vast range of possible applications in this area. In this book the authors consider the new field of application of endoscope technology in neuro-otology and skull base surgery. Dr. Sanna is part of The Grupppo Otologico, a world-renowned specialist center for the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the ear, skull base, facial nerve, head and neck, and paranasal sinuses.

Vacant urban land--the product of land market activity, the actions of private agents, and the policies of public agents--is an important challenge for policy makers. Vacant lots on the urban fringe and in central and interstitial areas have affected growth patterns in Latin America. Contributors to this book analyze the problems and opportunities related to vacant urban land in five cities: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Quito, Ecuador; Lima, Perú; and San Salvador, El Salvador.
