The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and actinomycetes are microorganisms in catfish ponds that produce compounds that render catfish off-flavor. Karmex has been suggested as an algicide to help eliminate this problem. Diuron, the active ingredient in karmex, and its major degradative product, 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) were employed to determine the effect of Karmex on the catfish pond ecosystem. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of diuron and 3,4-DCA on cyanobacteria and geosmin-producing actinomycetes from catfish ponds; microbial processes involved in the carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles; several bacterial pathogens of catfish and the fate of diuron and 3,4-DCA in catfish ponds. Neither compound had any obsevable effect on the growth or geosmin-production by actinomycetes. Microbial degraders were not adversaly affected by exposure to the diuron or 3,4-DCA, while lipid degraders were stimulated by the presence of diuron and unaffected by 3,4-DCA. Ammonification, nitrate reduction and denitrification, likewise, were not adversely affected by diuron nor 3,4-DCA. Nitrification was inhibited at diuron concentrations higher than 5 mg/L. Sulfide production was not increased by the presence of diuron or 3,4-DCA. Edwardsiella ictaluri, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Aeromonas salmonicida, four common bacterial pathogens, were inhibited by diuron and 3,4-DCA. Diuron and 3,4-DCA were rapidly degraded by catfish pond microorganisms.

All 50 states are implementing mandates of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) assignments for contaminants likely to impact water in the United States, making water quality management a timely topic. TMDL criteria are a new initiative under the Clean Water Act and of critical importance to agricultural producers and state and federal regulators. Unfortunately, few precedents for assignment of pollutant maxima exist. This volume will show what one state (Mississippi) is doing to determine the most cost-effective and reliable practices for reducing the potential for non-point source pollution of U.S. waters. Readers may be able to apply some of the lessons learned in the Mississippi Delta Management Systems Evaluation Area (MDMSEA) to their own region.
