Beets should be sown quite early, While the ground is cool and nioist, if sown on ground that holds its moisture well cover one inch deep. On dry ground One and one half inches deep. Beet seed has a hard nut like shell, and if there is not moisture'enough to soften this Sht 11 it will fail to come up. I Parsnips as well as beets, should be sown early. Sow on ground that Was well manured the year before, as freshly manured ground causes them to grow ill-shaped. Cover the seeds one-half inch deep. Carrots can be sown any time in the month of May, but it is better to sow before the ground gets hot and dry. Carrot seeds, 18 slow to come up, and should be sown on ground as free from weeds as possible. Cabbage. And turnips do the best on newly broken up ground. Plant cabbage ln hills two and one half feet apart, and three feet between rows; use a shovelful of fine manure in the hill With a small handful of superphosphate. Turnips want about the same treatment as cabbage, but Can be planted nearer together. Cucumbers. 'squashes and all members of the vine family, do the best on newly broken up ground.
