Le livre que nous présentons est le fruit d'une réflexion menée depuis plus de trois ans notamment avec le concours de la Commission des Communautés Européennes autour du thème général «identité européenne et pluralité des cultures». Le passage de l'Europe économique à l'Europe dite «politique» pose avec acuité le problème de l'identité. Dans quelle Communauté les pays candidats à l'adhésion vont-ils entrer? Quel est le sens de l'intégration toujours plus poussée entre les Etats membres? Personne ne nie qu'une conscience d'appartenance à une Communauté est indispensable à la construction d'une entité à vocation politique. Mais comment cette conscience va-t-elle se concilier avec les identités nationales et régionales? Les diversités culturelles ne vont-elles pas faire obstacle à l'avènement d'une véritable citoyenneté européenne? Cet ouvrage s'efforce de répondre à ces interrogations en posant le problème de l'identité dans toute son ampleur, comme problème politique et institutionnel, comme problème sociologique, comme problème culturel. Nous n'ambitionnons pas de présenter un programme sectoriel détaillé de mesures mais plutôt un cadre de réflexion pour situer éventuellement un tel programme.
