Writers, editors, activists and prostitutes. Women along the US-Mexico border served in many more capacities than simply wives and mothers, though those were their primary roles. Historically, religion was the link between women and the written word. According to the editors of this volume, Mexican women—particularly those from the privileged classes—had access to secular reading beginning in the 1800s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several periodicals dedicated to the education of the “fairer sex” emerged. Though the male voice initially predominated, women began contributing poetry and essays to various publications and eventually became editors of their own magazines and newspapers. This collection of ten essays, based on the examination of publications from the US-Mexico region between 1850-1950, explores the role of women in print culture. Leading to a better understanding of women in the history of Mexican border life, the essays are organized in three thematic groupings: “Exploring the Archives: Women and Written Culture in Northeastern Mexico during the Late Nineteenth Century,” “The Cultural History of Women and Print Culture” and “A Transcultural View of Women and their Role as Activists in Northern Mexico and Texas.” The scholars who researched the archival collections of newspapers, magazines and other print matter write about a variety of topics, including the participation of women in the War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the belief females were inferior and should not be educated outside the home and even the cultural history of prostitutes. Published as part of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project, this compendium of academic articles sheds light on women’s roles—especially as readers, writers and editors—in the Texas-Mexico border region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This volume delves deeply into the role played by stories and storytelling in shaping, controlling and mapping present-day Spain, and examines fiction in various manifestations and genres, especially written and filmic. It contrasts such stories and their context with the past, investigating the differences and similarities between spatially and geographically varying narrations in order to tease out the link between the time of telling and the act of living. Throughout the book, scholars look separately at this phenomenon, and their findings reveal a close bond between events occurring in the real world and the relating of fictional stories. Particularly in Spain, the geographic space of interest here, storytelling is used both as catharsis and didactically. Authors and filmmakers find inspiration in everyday occurrences, and, while there is nothing unusual in that, the interest here lies in the consequent transformation of these occurrences into fascinating stories that attempt to make sense of chaotic events, connect those events temporally, and explore the meaning of the consequent coherence. Stories are at the very essence of humanity, be they fictional or based on everyday reality. This collection focuses specifically on Spain where easily identifiable features of history (such as the Spanish Civil War, the Franco Dictatorship, transition, democracy, and the global economic crisis) have had a major impact on everyday life. The narratives emerging show clear evidence of that impact, with an emphasis on such themes as the significance of memory, the impossibility and instability of such memory, the chaotic nature of life, and the place of the nation/state in the psyche of the individual, with emerging themes investigating the role of solidarity and empathy in the empowerment of the individual. This volume is informed by the shift that occurred in the twentieth century towards a world of unstable parameters, whereby whatever knowledge that is received must be questioned as to the extent of its authenticity since that knowledge is always affected by memory, experience, and time, all subjective phenomena in themselves.

Uno de los pilares sobre los que se sostiene la visión del mundo hegemónica en la actualidad es el de la importancia fundamental atribuida a los individuos, entendidos como seres libres y soberanos, y, en consecuencia, responsables. Sin embargo, no está claro que semejante defensa de la libre responsabilidad sea la actitud realmente más extendida en nuestra sociedad, en la que lo que parece generalizado en creciente medida es la sistemática búsqueda de argumentos exculpatorios que minimicen la aceptación de responsabilidad por parte de los individuos (el ambiente familiar, el contexto económico, la inestabilidad emocional...). Desde el punto de vista teórico, estaríamos ante una paradoja. De tanto exculpar al individuo a base de responsabilizar a las estructuras, hemos terminado por convertirle en el eslabón más débil de la cadena. La misma modernidad que en un principio pretendía hacer descansar el sentido del mundo sobre el ser humano, convirtiéndolo en la nueva clave para justificar lo real, al final ha terminado por considerarlo un elemento incapaz de sostener nada ni hacerse cargo de acción alguna a poco que ésta tenga consecuencias negativas.

Auto/biographical narratives of the Americas are marked by the underlying themes of movement and belonging. This collection proposes that the impact of the historic or contemporary movement of peoples to, in, and from the Americas—whether chosen or forced—motivates the ways in which identities are constructed in this contested space. Such movement results in a cyclical quest to belong, and to understand belonging, that reverberates through narratives of the Americas. The volume brings together essays written from diverse national, cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary perspectives to trace these transnational motifs in life writing across the Americas. Drawing on international scholars from the seemingly disparate regions of the Americas—North America, the Caribbean, and Latin America—this book extends critical theories of life writing beyond limiting national boundaries. The scholarship included approaches narrative inquiry from the fields of literature, linguistics, history, art history, sociology, anthropology, political science, pedagogy, gender studies, critical race studies, and indigenous studies. As a whole, this volume advances discourse in auto/biography studies, life writing, and identity studies by locating transnational themes in narratives of the Americas and placing them in international and interdisciplinary conversations.

This study explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia and rejects the exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness'. This study, charting the construction of a Catalan identity from the nineteenth-century cultural renaissance until the present day, explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia. Drawing on postcolonial and multicultural literary theories, it argues that Castilian- and Catalan-language narratives are expressions of the same culture. Through detailed analyses of texts by Terenci Moix, Francisco Candel, Ignasi Riera, Montserrat Roig, Juan Marsé, Ramon Pallicé, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, among others, the author demonstrates that such writers share similar preoccupations and points of view and also engage in a complex literary and cultural dialogue that cuts across the established linguistic divisions that characterise cultural politics in Catalonia. The Catalan literary establishment's exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness' ischallenged and the author proposes redefining traditional understandings of Catalan literature to take into account texts produced by all members of Catalan society.
