Trained as an archaeologist and art historian and being a practising painter, Professor Galavaris has been able to relate diverse disciplines in his work, as shown by the wide range of his numerous publications. He moves from the early history of the eucharistic bread in the Orthodox Church, the dramatic impact of the Liturgy on illuminated Byzantine manuscripts, to the role of the icon in: the life of the Church, the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke and the European painting of the 20th century. The Magnificent Art Collection of Dr Lillian Malcove Consists of 513 pieces: paintings, drawings, furniture, icons, manuscripts, and textiles, as well as works in terracotta, glass, bronze, stone, enamel, ivory, silver, and gold. They represent a vast range of art history, from prehistory to the twentieth century, including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and western medieval works, and even a few pieces from the Far East. Dr Malcove, a psychoanalyst in New York, bequeathed the collection to the University of Toronto so that it might be used in teaching. It is housed in the University of Toronto Art Centre. This catalogue was initially produced in conjunction with the first exhibit of the collection, presented at the University of Toronto in two parts, late in 1985 and early in 1986. Each piece is illustrated in the catalogue, and this new paperback edition features eight pages of colour photographs. Extensive descriptions, identifying and evaluating the objects, have been provided by scholars who represent diverse areas of expertise in art and archaeology. Also included are five brief memoirs by friends of Dr Malcove. The catalogue stands as a permanent record of an extraordinary collection and a unique perspective on art from a variety of cultures throughout history.

This collection of essays, which derive from a symposium held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, tells the story of how medieval art was collected by both individuals and institutions in the American Midwest. This book will appeal to both medievalists and scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth century American history. In addition, it will also appeal to scholars who are interested in museum studies and the history of collecting. The essays in the first section, “Collecting and Displaying Medieval Art,” consider the formation of medieval art collections at influential cultural institutions in three of the most important centers of industry and culture in the Midwest: Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The second section, “Medieval Art as Inspiration and Education,” examines the motives of both private donors and museum professionals in forming collections and establishing period rooms and cloistered spaces at museums in Toledo, Kansas City, and St. Louis, among others. At the opposite end of the spectrum was a new trend in curatorial practice, beginning in the 1930s, that favored the dismantling of period rooms and espoused displaying historical works of art in more distinctly modern settings, a theme that pervades section three, “Medieval Art and Modernism.” An essay on medieval art in Midwestern university art museums and another one that considers the impact of works from medieval collections in special exhibitions serve as a remarkable coda to the rest of the volume. Two appendices follow this, one that provides an overview of medieval art collections in Midwestern university museums and another which provides a biographical sketch of prominent dealers of medieval art from 1900-1950.
