GOOD DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE NOW. One of the most important quite dominant processes in architecture is design process, and the goal of architecture design is to obtain good design. Good design has double meaning, aesthetic and ethic. In architecture the two should be united as a single goal that a design process should strive for. Moreover, an architectural product does not only effect its client and architect. On a broader level, architectural products also effect their surrounding environments. In a large scale, they may even have an effect on the economy and the social and political condition. The question is : How does an architectural design attain the label ‘good design’? We tried to find the answer through a round table discussion by inviting the two groups of professionals in Indonesia: practitioners and academics. What are their thought on this matter ? You can peruse them in the main coverage of Archinesia vol.5. Howard J. Wiarda is one of the leading global scholars of international relations, comparative politics, and foreign policy, and the author/editor of more than sixty books. Now in this highly personal and swashbuckling account, Professor Wiarda tells the stories that lie behind the research: his adventures in Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and South Africa. Complementing his academic work, these three volumes are filled with impressions, research findings, gossip, and preliminary ideas and concepts-the true "stuff" of how scholarly books get written. For Wiarda has had a remarkable life: in some of the nation's leading universities, academic policy work in the State and Defense Departments, and denizen of the Washington think tanks. He has also lived abroad for extensive periods and traveled widely in some of the world's most troubled and exciting places. These books tell the story of his "adventures in research."

The Gay Archipelago is the first book-length exploration of the lives of gay men in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation and home to more Muslims than any other country. Based on a range of field methods, it explores how Indonesian gay and lesbian identities are shaped by nationalism and globalization. Yet the case of gay and lesbian Indonesians also compels us to ask more fundamental questions about how we decide when two things are "the same" or "different." The book thus examines the possibilities of an "archipelagic" perspective on sameness and difference. Tom Boellstorff examines the history of homosexuality in Indonesia, and then turns to how gay and lesbian identities are lived in everyday Indonesian life, from questions of love, desire, and romance to the places where gay men and lesbian women meet. He also explores the roles of mass media, the state, and marriage in gay and lesbian identities. The Gay Archipelago is unusual in taking the whole nation-state of Indonesia as its subject, rather than the ethnic groups usually studied by anthropologists. It is by looking at the nation in cultural terms, not just political terms, that identities like those of gay and lesbian Indonesians become visible and understandable. In doing so, this book addresses questions of sexuality, mass media, nationalism, and modernity with implications throughout Southeast Asia and beyond.

For decades, NGOs targeting world hunger focused on ensuring that adequate quantities of food were being sent to those in need. In the 1990s, the international food policy community turned its focus to the "hidden hunger" of micronutrient deficiencies, a problem that resulted in two scientific solutions: fortification, the addition of nutrients to processed foods, and biofortification, the modification of crops to produce more nutritious yields. This hidden hunger was presented as a scientific problem to be solved by "experts" and scientifically engineered smart foods rather than through local knowledge, which was deemed unscientific and, hence, irrelevant. In Hidden Hunger, Aya Hirata Kimura explores this recent emphasis on micronutrients and smart foods within the international development community and, in particular, how the voices of women were silenced despite their expertise in food purchasing and preparation. Kimura grounds her analysis in case studies of attempts to enrich and market three basic foods—rice, wheat flour, and baby food—in Indonesia. She shows the power of nutritionism and how its technical focus enhanced the power of corporations as a government partner while restricting public participation in the making of policy for public health and food. She also analyzes the role of advertising to promote fortified foodstuffs and traces the history of Golden Rice, a crop genetically engineered to alleviate vitamin A deficiencies. Situating the recent turn to smart food in Indonesia and elsewhere as part of a long history of technical attempts to solve the Third World food problem, Kimura deftly analyzes the intersection of scientific expertise, market forces, and gendered knowledge to illuminate how hidden hunger ultimately defined women as victims rather than as active agents.
