The epistles of the New Testament provide insight into the realities of the life of the early church, guidance for those called to lead the church, and comfort in the face of theological questions. The Protestant Reformers of the sixteenth century also found wisdom and guidance in these letters. In this RCS volume, Lee Gatiss and Bradley Green guide readers through a diversity of early modern commentary on the New Testament epistles.

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions that help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” that highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” that show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” that identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible. Over the course of 12 weeks, this study connects Paul's letters to the Thessalonians to the lives of Christians today. These epistles encourage readers by reminding them of the salvation God will bring to all those whom he has called—strengthening them to pursue lives of holiness and love as they anticipate Jesus's return.

'Given the relationship between Paul and the Thessalonian Christians, it should not surprise us that his letters to them throb with tenderness and care...here, as perhaps nowhere else in his letters, we see how the apostle loved his converts and laboured to lead them on in the faith. This should make every serious Christian, and especially every responsible Chrisitan leader, turn with eagerness to the text of the letters that await us.' From the Introduction by Andrew Young.

The letters First and Second Thessalonians are traditionally associated with the Pauline foundation of the Macedonian Church at Thessalonica. The first is seen as representing Paul's earliest epistolary efforts and as providing two successive moments in his long relationship as advisor to that community. Soon after leaving the area for the southern province of Achaia, Paul addresses the concerns of the new Gentile converts and at a later period responds more directly to queries received from the thriving and successful community. The second document, written in Paul's name and at a later date, attempts to calm the apocalyptic fervor of the community by reiterating its traditional eschatological and Christological teaching. After treating these introductory matters, this study provides a new translation of each section of the canonical text, explains in notes the pertinent textual and linguistic features of the text, and then offers in a series of interpretive messages a literary, rhetorical, and thematic analysis of the biblical documents. The constant concern of this commentary is to provide assistance to modern readers in discerning the relationship between the authors and their intended readers. Short bibliographies suggest other important modern studies.

I and II Thessalonians are letters written to new Christian communities in Thessalonica early in Paul's ministry. Paul wrote these letters after a brief stay in order to instruct them further as they anticipate Jesus' second coming. In this new volume in the acclaimed New Testament Library series, M. Eugene Boring offers a scholarly interpretation of I and II Thessalonians while examining their historical context. Boring helps the reader learn to read these letters in context, particularly in relation to Paul's life as well as to the new converts who lived in Thessalonica. He addresses aspects such as structure, tone, style, language, andâ€"for II Thessaloniansâ€"questions of authorship, while offering insightful theological perspectives. Boring's critical interpretation is a welcome addition to the New Testament Library and provides a solid resource for both the academy and the church. The New Testament Library offers authoritative commentary on every book and major aspect of the New Testament, providing fresh translations based on the best available ancient manuscripts, critical portrayals of the historical world in which the books were created, careful attention to their literary design, and a theologically perceptive exposition of the biblical text. The editorial board consists of C. Clifton Black, Princeton Theological Seminary; M. Eugene Boring, Brite Divinity School; and John T. Carroll, Union Presbyterian Seminary.

The 1974 estimate by Interpretation that Ernest Best's volume on 1 & 2 Thessalonians “is probably the best exegetical study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians available ... a superb commentary” continues to ring true forty years later. This is indeed one of the finest commentaries on 1 & 2 Thessalonians available-in any language. The Journal of Theological Studies called it “exhaustive” and concluded that the commentary is “reliable, judicious, and nearly always lucid. He [Best] ... takes us as far as we can reasonably go in understanding the mind of Paul as it expressed itself in these writings.”
