"As they narrate their lives in these rituals, leaders also give other participants ways to address some of the pressing issues in their own lives. Special emphasis is given to the emotional effects of narrative performances and how these accounts move people to identify with others, compel them to act in appropriate ways, or assuage their grief over a lost loved one. Oakdale analyzes autobiographical performances using insights from studies on ritual, life history, and linguistic anthropology to better understand Kayabi notions of self and person and the role these narrative expressions play in their social life."--BOOK JACKET.

I Foresee My Life is a study of the ritual performances of the Kayabi, a Brazilian indigenous people, during the 1990s. Kayabi rituals are distinct in that they center on the autobiographical narratives of living people. Suzanne Oakdale discusses these autobiographical performances in the context of shamanic cures, mortuary rites, and political oratory. In each ritual, leaders describe how some of the dramatic environmental, economic, and political changes taking place in the Amazon have affected them. For example, the Kayabi have moved from a heavily colonized area to a reservation and as a result have had to address different facets of Indian identity, new forms of commodity consumption, residence patterns, and leadership. As they narrate their lives in these rituals, leaders also give other participants ways to address some of the pressing issues in their own lives. Special emphasis is given to the emotional effects of narrative performances and how these accounts move people to identify with others, compel them to act in appropriate ways, or assuage their grief over a lost loved one. Oakdale analyzes autobiographical performances using insights from studies on ritual, life history, and linguistic anthropology to better understand Kayabi notions of self and person and the role these narrative expressions play in their social life. Richly textured with eyewitness accounts and indigenous voices, I Foresee My Life demonstrates the enduring power of indigenous performances today. Suzanne Oakdale is an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque.

Do you remember that time in your life when things took a dramatic turn for the better or worse? Or have friends ever told you that your story is so interesting you should write it down in a book? Ladies that Rock is such a book. I have been fortunate to find many admirable women who, on looking back, recognize the turning points in their lives, ones that have made them who they are today. My own story was the catalyst for this book. How can I forget the exact moment that started the chain of events taking me from being a financially struggling, single mother of three young children teaching thirty-two fitness classes a week, transforming, out of necessity and determination, into a business woman who travelled to every corner of the globe, training thousands of women to run their own skincare and cosmetic businesses. Evolving out of my life’s interest in supporting women’s successes, be they physical or financial, comes this compilation of real-life, sometimes gritty narratives, Ladies that Rock.

Jordan is a loving, intelligent, and energetic boy who, at a very young age, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. As a result, he is significantly limited in communication skills, social development, and academic progress. Additionally, Jordan and his family sometimes have to contend with those who are either not receptive to or not well-informed about special-needs individuals. Despite his condition, Jordan's family loves him unceasingly. Together, they persevere through the challenges that accompany the autism and do all they can to obtain the best services and benefits available for Jordan. As time goes by and the family adjusts to their unique struggles, they are hit with another huge blow. Just prior to reaching adolescence, Jordan is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. All of a sudden, Jordan is dealing with more than just social and developmental issues but also a major physical health scare. Yet amid the devastating news and extremely difficult process overall, the family's faith remains strong, and Jordan continues to persevere like the champion that he is. This memoir Half My Life: Special in Many Ways is a follow on to the initial work entitled Half My Life: The Testimony of a Father and His Special-Needs Child. It is essentially a peek into the lives of a family with a special-needs child, chronicling the experiences and adventures, including the ups and downs, highlights and struggles, triumphs and setbacks, as told from the perspective of one of Jordan's biggest fans--his dad. The author will donate a portion of the proceeds to selected charities related to special needs.

Award-winning translation of the complete memoirs of Casanova available for the first time in paperback. In volumes 1 and 2, Casanova tells the story of his family, his first loves, and his early travels. With the death of his grandmother, he is sent to a seminary—but is soon expelled. He is briefly imprisoned in the fortress of Sant' Andrea. After wandering from Naples to Rome in search of a patron, he enters the service of Cardinal Acquaviva. Because every previous edition of Casanova's Memoirs had been abridged to suppress the author's political and religious views and tame his vivid, often racy, style, the literary world considered it a major event when Willard R. Trask's translation of the complete original text was published in six double volumes between 1966 and 1971. Trask's award-winning translation now appears in paperback for the first time.
