Although this book was painful to write, having to dredge up the garbage from my early life, I forged on, seeing that there are far too many suffering abuse or the lasting effects of it, such as hurts, inward and outward, scars, bitterness, anger, and even hate. Some of these are misplaced. Instead of it coming out toward the source of their abuse, it is usually directed toward the ones who try to help or by uncontrolled fits of anger on otherwise insignificant matters. Even if there was only one suffering, that is one too many! I also seek to reach the abuser in this book. I do understand that there are just as many factors that have caused or are driving others to do such hideous things as there are the abused. Maybe you didnt mean to or you felt power when you did these things, but no matter, God can and will forgive you! I believe this book would be a much-needed asset to any church, school, library, and home; it is meant to give hope and direction to the hurting, to help the one who finds themselves in a no-win situation because of their actions, and finally to heighten awareness in our families, communities, and in our churches that abuse is real, has many faces, and is standing right in our way. Making people aware will bring about a positive change and, with God, we can stop this life-altering crime!

This elegant and nuanced literary gem explores the intricacies of friendship, secrets, and two marriages, for fans of The Dinner and Dept. of Speculation. "Often I am happy and yet I want to cry; / For no heart fully shares my joy." -- B.S. Ingemann Ellinor is seventy. Her husband Georg has just passed away, and she is struck with the need to confide in someone. She addresses Anna, her long-dead best friend, who was also Georg's first wife. Fully aware of the absurdity of speaking to someone who cannot hear her, Ellinor nevertheless finds it meaningful to divulge long-held secrets and burdens of her past: her mother's heartbreaking pride; Ellinor's courtship with her first husband; their seemingly charmed friendship with Anna and Georg; the disastrous ski trip that shattered the two couples' lives. Wry and mellow yet infused with subdued emotion, this philosophical, lyrical novel moves in parallel narrative threads while questioning the assumptions we cherish concerning identity and love.

Author Theodor H. Winkler was deeply involved in Switzerland's transformation of the Cold War policy of comprehensive defence into a modern security policy designed to foster stability and peace. Intellectual father of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, Winkler has helped to create a set of foreign and security policy tools of world renown. He was also instrumental in shaping the vision of the "Maison de la Paix," in the very heart of international Geneva, home to the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, the three Geneva centres and more than a dozen other institutions serving peace and development-a place to meet, to think, and to act unique in the world. In his memoirs, Winkler tells the story how this transformation came about. It is a unique testimony on a crucial period of Swiss foreign and security policy. The book is a must for anyone interested in Swiss policy and international security.
