The hymns and tunes that could best be spared are replaced by hymns and music, new and old, gathered from the ample resources supplied within the last ten years by composers and compilers of all denominations in England and America. To all whose contributions and labors have helped to enrich this book, our obligations are gratefully acknowledged. While many hymns have been restored to their original text, some slight changes, established by familiar usage, have been accepted without note. Hymns with substantial varia tions from the original are indicated by the sign 1 attached to the author's name. The collection has been made catholic and inclusive for varying moods and experiences, and for manifold phases of thought. Its aim is to present within moderate size, and with appropriate music, the best hymns in the English tongue.
