This book presents the lecture notes and articles from the workshop on hydrodynamic limits held at The Fields Institute (Toronto). The first part of the book contains the notes from the mini-course given by Professor S. R. S. Varadhan. The second part contains research articles reviewing the diverse progress in the study of hydrodynamic limits and related areas. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory and its techniques, including entropy and relative entropy methods, large deviation estimates, and techniques in nongradient systems. This book, especially the lectures of Part I, could be used as a text for an advanced graduate course in hydrodynamic limits and interacting particle systems.

Systems of partial differential equations reflecting conservation laws hold significant relevance to a variety of theoretical and practical applications, including compressible fluid flow, electromagnetism, elasticity theory, and other areas of continuum mechanics. This field of nonlinear analysis is currently experiencing a marked increase in successful research activity. The EU-TMR network "Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws held a summer program offering short courses on the Analysis of Systems of Conservation Laws. This book contains five of the self-contained short courses presented during this program by experts of international reputation. These courses, which address solutions to hyperbolic systems by the front tracking method, non-strictly hyperbolic conservation laws, hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems, hyperbolic relaxation problems, the stability of nonlinear waves in viscous media and numerics, and more, represent the state of the art of most central aspects of the field.

This book contains expository papers that give an up-to-date account of recent developments and open problems in the geometry and topology of manifolds, along with several research articles that present new results appearing in published form for the first time. The unifying theme is the problem of understanding manifolds in low dimensions, notably in dimensions three and four, and the techniques include algebraic topology, surgery theory, Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten gauge theory,Heegaard Floer homology, contact and symplectic geometry, and Gromov-Witten invariants. The articles collected for this volume were contributed by participants of the Conference "Geometry and Topology of Manifolds" held at McMaster University on May 14-18, 2004 and are representative of the manyexcellent talks delivered at the conference.

"This book is a testimony to the BIRS Workshop, and it covers a wide range of topics at the interface of number theory and string theory, with special emphasis on modular forms and string duality. They include the recent advances as well as introductory expositions on various aspects of modular forms, motives, differential equations, conformal field theory, topological strings and Gromov-Witten invariants, mirror symmetry, and homological mirror symmetry. The contributions are roughly divided into three categories: arithmetic and modular forms, geometric and differential equations, and physics and string theory. The book is suitable for researchers working at the interface of number theory and string theory."--BOOK JACKET.

This volume consists of the proceedings of the Workshop on Analysis and Simulation of Communication Networks held at The Fields Institute (Toronto). The workshop was divided into two main themes, entitled "Stability and Load Balancing of a Network of Call Centres" and "Traffic and Performance". The call centre industry is large and fast-growing. In order to provide top-notch customer service, it needs good mathematical models. The first part of the volume focuses on probabilistic issues involved in optimizing the performance of a call centre. While this was the motivating application, many of the papers are also applicable to more general distributed queueing networks. The second part of the volume discusses the characterization of traffic streams and how to estimate their impact on the performance of a queueing system. The performance of queues under worst-case traffic flows or flows with long bursts is treated. These studies are motivated by questions about buffer dimensioning and call admission control in ATM or IP networks. This volume will serve researchers as a comprehensive, state-of-the-art reference source on developments in this rapidly expanding field.

Stochastic biomathematical models are becoming increasingly important as new light is shed on the role of noise in living systems. In certain biological systems, stochastic effects may even enhance a signal, thus providing a biological motivation for the noise observed in living systems. Recent advances in stochastic analysis and increasing computing power facilitate the analysis of more biophysically realistic models, and this book provides researchers in computational neuroscience and stochastic systems with an overview of recent developments. Key concepts are developed in chapters written by experts in their respective fields. Topics include: one-dimensional homogeneous diffusions and their boundary behavior, large deviation theory and its application in stochastic neurobiological models, a review of mathematical methods for stochastic neuronal integrate-and-fire models, stochastic partial differential equation models in neurobiology, and stochastic modeling of spreading cortical depression.
