This SAE Standard provides general and dimensional specifications for the most common hose fittings used in conjunction with hydraulic hoses specified in SAE J517 and utilized in hydraulic systems on mobile and stationary equipment. The general specifications contained in Sections 1 through 15 are applicable to all hydraulic hose fittings and supplement the detailed specifications for the 100R-series fittings contained in the later sections of this document. This document shall be utilized as a procurement document only to the extent agreed upon by the manufacturer and user. Refer to SAE J517 for specifications of hose and information on hose assemblies. SAE J1273 contains information on application factors affecting hose fittings, hose, and hose assemblies. NOTE: THE RATED WORKING PRESSURE OF A HOSE ASSEMBLY COMPRISING SAE J516 FITTINGS AND SAE J517 HOSE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE LOWER OF THE TWO WORKING PRESSURE RATED VALUES. The following are hose fitting types contained in this document: a. Male dryseal pipe thread type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 1A to 1C for the respective styles, and in Tables 1A to 1M for the applicable hoses and sizes. b. Male straight thread O-ring boss type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 2A and 2B for the respective styles, and in Tables 2A to 2H for the applicable hoses and sizes. c. Male 37-degree flared type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 3A to 3C for the respective styles, and in Tables 3A to 3L for the applicable hoses and sizes. d. Female 37-degree flared type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 4A to 7B for the respective styles and shapes, and in Tables 4A to 4M for the applicable hoses and sizes. e. Male 45-degree flared type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 8A and 8B for the respective styles, and in Tables 5A to 5E for the applicable hoses and sizes. f. Female 45-degree flared type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 9A to 12B for the respective styles and shapes, and in Tables 6A to 6E for the applicable hoses and sizes. g. Male flareless type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 13A and 13B for the respective styles, and in Tables 7A and 7B for the applicable hoses and sizes. h. Female flareless type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 14A to 14C for the respective styles, and in Tables 8A and 8B for the applicable hoses and sizes. i. 4-bolt split flange type hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 15A to 21C for the respective styles and shapes, and in Tables 9A to 9I2 for the applicable hoses and sizes. j. Female O-ring face seal hose fittings shall be as shown in Figures 22A to 25B for the respective styles, and Tables 10A to 10L for the applicable hoses and sizes. It is recommended that where step sizes or additional types of fittings are required, they be designed to conform with the specifications of this document insofar as they may apply. The following general specifications shall supplement the dimensional data contained in the tables with respect to all unspecified detail.

This coding system is intended to provide a convenient means of identifying the various tube, pipe, and hose fittings and of transmitting technical or engineering information relating to them wherever drawings or other pictorial media may not be readily available. The code has been kept flexible to permit expansion to cover new fitting categories or styles and, if the need develops, the inclusion of materials. The system is also compatible with automatic data processing equipment. It is not intended that this code should supersede established systems or means of identification. However, because the SAE code for automotive flare fittings shown in SAE J512 is also applicable to corresponding refrigeration fittings in SAE J513, both an SAE code and the existing code ANSI B70.1, are included throughout SAE J513. Therefore, it should be the prerogative of the user to apply that code which best satisfies his requirements.
