Islam's fourth caliph, Ali, can be considered one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. His nearly universal portrayal in Muslim literature as a pious authority obscures centuries of contestation and the eventual rehabilitation of his character. In this book, Nebil Husayn examines the enduring legacy of the nawasib, early Muslims who disliked Ali and his descendants. The nawasib participated in politics and scholarly discussions on religion at least until the ninth century. However, their virtual disappearance in Muslim societies has led many to ignore their existence and the subtle ways in which their views subsequently affected Islamic historiography and theology. By surveying medieval Muslim literature across multiple genres and traditions including the Sunni, Mu'tazili, and Ibadi, Husayn reconstructs the claims and arguments of the nawasib and illuminates the methods that Sunni scholars employed to gradually rehabilitate the image of Ali from a villainous character to a righteous one.

There is no disagreement between Sunnis and Shias that Imam Ḥusayn's martyrdom in Karbala was a historical event illustrating true Islamic leadership and the exemplary character of someone who made a sincere attempt at safeguarding the ideology of Islam with the intention to retain it as an exact replica of the setup of the Prophetic era. But of late we see attempts by some to make Ḥusayn's martyrdom a Sunni-Shia polemic. This book is in response to that, it contains four essays on Karbala by four highly respected Sunni scholars and leaders, and we have added a new foreword to expand the story and give the reader a more comprehensive understanding of the importance of this heart-rending tragedy in Islamic history.

This book is as much about Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him, as it is about his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them, for truly, they were inseparable. From the moment of their births, grandfather and grandsons delighted in each other's company on a daily basis; he finding rest and relaxation in their company, and they revelling in the unconditional love he lavished upon them. The reader will gain a delightful insight into his special family relationship of a grandfather who dotes on his grandsons, but never neglects to teach and educate them in good manners, right living and a sincere concern for the afterlife. Charming cameos of life in the noble Prophet's family, of the boys riding horseback on their grandfather, being carried by him, playing games together, having family arguments, all contribute to the sense that this is a very normal, human family. The story follows the two brothers into adulthood and pays tribute to the fine young men they become, thanks to the blessed Prophet's tutelage. Outstanding examples of what it means to be a true Muslim (Hasan, leader, preacher, peace-maker, supreme example of morality; Husayn, principled, courageous and self-sacrificing) both brothers die as martyrs for Islam, and find their rewards as Leaders of the Youth in Paradise-to the great delight of their grandfather!

Saddam Hussein and Islam, 1968–2003, offers an intellectual history of the Bathi Party from the 1940s through 2003. Amatzia Baram focuses on the transition from its early insistence on "unity, freedom, and socialism" to its Islamization by the time it was toppled by U.S. forces in 2003, a change largely impelled by the need to rally Iraqis against Iran during their war of 1980–88. Baram reveals signs that Saddam Hussein himself became some sort of born-again Muslim, though these signs are inconclusive. Sources include open source material but also internal secret files and highly classified audiotapes of Saddam Hussein that were made available to researchers at the Conflict Records Research Center at National Defense University and some documents at the Hoover Institution.
