August 29, 2005, was the day that Mother Nature decided to once again "slam dunk" the Gulf Coast as she sent Hurricane Katrina careening into basically the same area that Hurricane Camille hit in 1969. This book describes the events as Katrina roared into Diamondhead, Mississippi, a 35-year-old retirement community of 8,000 residents that sits on the top of the Bay of St. Louis, five miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Diamondhead is located just to the right of where the eye of the storm hit. The book also touches on the devastation of surrounding towns such as the Kiln, Waveland and Bay St. Louis and more. (Title) is a gripping portrait of a small community, convinced that water would never come over Interstate Highway 10 (I-0) and reach its streets. Diamondhead was thrown into chaos as the fury of Katrina sent tornadoes and floodwaters of up to thirty feet of water into its streets and homes. The national media failed to consider this community as hard hit by Katrina although some 500 homes were uninhabitable following the storm. First-hand, personal and bizarre survival stories of real people, many who stayed for the storm, are revealed as they remember that terrifying day. These detailed anecdotes are accompanied by dozens of photos. This is the story of a community that was left to rely on its wits, ingenuity, generosity and neighbors in order to return their lives to normalcy. It is definitely a book for armchair storm chasers.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating storms to hit the US. Most of the attention is focused on the destruction in New Orleans, but the Mississippi Gulf Coast experienced untold damage as well. Bay St. Louis and Waveland, Mississippi, were ground zero for Katrina's landfall. But for all its fury, Katrina brought miracles along with its trials. Blown Together is a collection of over twenty-five true accounts of the impact of this storm on families and communities as well as the beautiful unity and cooperation it brought from volunteers near and far. "The cover of Blown Together: The Trials and Miracles of Katrina says it all-many came together, lending a hand to be a blessing to those in need. Fr. Sebastian has eloquently woven the tragic events of Katrina with the beauty of neighbors and strangers coming together. It helps us realize that we can find good even in our darkest hour." -Robin Roberts, co-anchor, Good Morning America, proud Mississippian

Winner of the 2010 Eudora Welty Book Prize and the Mississippi Library Association’s Nonfiction Author’s Award for 2011 Under Surge, Under Siege shows how Hurricane Katrina tore into Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, raking away lives, buildings, and livelihoods in a place known for its picturesque, coastal views; its laid-back, artsy downtown; and its deep-dyed southern cordiality. The tragedy also revealed the inner workings of a community with an indomitable heart and profound neighborly bonds. Those connections often brought out the best in people under the worst of circumstances. In Under Surge, Under Siege, Ellis Anderson, who rode out the storm in her Bay St. Louis home and sheltered many neighbors afterwards, offers stories of generosity, heroism, and laughter in the midst of terror and desperate uncertainty. Divided into two parts, this book invites readers into the intimate enclave before, during, and after the storm. “Under Surge” focuses on connections between residents, and then it demonstrates how those bonds sustained them through the worst hurricane in US history. “Under Siege” documents the first three years of the grinding aftermath, detailing the unforeseen burdens of stress and depression, insurance scandals, and opportunists that threatened to complete the annihilation of the plucky town. A blend of memoir, personal diary, and firsthand reportage, Under Surge, Under Siege creates a compelling American testament to the strength of the human spirit.

"Rising from the rubble of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, the Mississippi Gulf Coast has spent more than a decade trying to recover from the ruin left in the wake of America's worst natural disaster. While the coastline was still scarred by numerous "steps to nowhere" and other telling reminders of destruction, Isbell began his work to show renewal in the face of adversity. During the earliest days following the storm, Isbell was sent out to document the grim aftermath of Katrina. Then-governor Haley Barbour famously said, "I can only imagine that this is what Hiroshima looked like 60 years ago." Seeing damage everywhere, Isbell became overwhelmed by the destruction surrounding him and soon wanted to see images of hope and recovery. It was at that point Isbell made a promise to show the "true Mississippi Gulf Coast," an area known for its natural beauty and spirit. Through its pictures, The Mississippi Gulf Coast shows what people fall in love with about the area--the sunrises, sunsets, the distinctive character of each town along the waterfront, historic places, and the more traditional coast cuisine and art, gaming and water sports. The book's overview provides a brief history of the area from the first settlers to the waves of immigrant peoples who have helped shaped the character and workforce of the region. With its combination of images and words, The Mississippi Gulf Coast will refamiliarize some and introduce others to Coast towns like Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, d'Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, and Moss Point." -- Provided by publisher.

This book presents the fullest account yet written of the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rooted in a wealth of oral histories, it tells the dramatic but underreported story of a people who confronted the unprecedented devastation of sixty-five-thousand homes when the eye wall and powerful northeast quadrant of the hurricane swept a record thirty-foot storm surge across a seventy-five-mile stretch of unprotected Mississippi towns and cities. James Patterson Smith takes us through life and death accounts of storm day, August 29, 2005, and the precarious days of food and water shortages that followed. Along the way the narrative treats us to inspiring episodes of neighborly compassion and creative responses to the greatest natural disaster in American history. The heroes of this saga are the local people and local officials. In often moving accounts, the book addresses the Mississippi Gulf Coast's long struggle to remove a record-setting volume of debris and get on with the rebuilding of homes, schools, jobs, and public infrastructure. Along the way readers are offered insights into the politics of recovery funding and the bureaucratic bungling and hubris that afflicted the storm response and complicated and delayed the work of recovery. Still, there are ample accounts of things done well, and a moving chapter gives us a feel for the psychological, spiritual, and material impact of the eight hundred thousand people from across the nation who gave of themselves as volunteers in the Mississippi recovery effort.

In the immediate aftermath of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour appointed the Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding, and Renewal. In summer 2006, the commission asked the RAND Gulf States Policy Institute to describe the state of the pre-Katrina housing markets in Mississippi's three coastal counties, to estimate the damage the storm did to their housing markets, to describe the status of the recovery effort, and to identify problems that might inhibit that recovery. The authors found that Katrina damaged about 60 percent of the three counties' housing stock, but the extent and intensity of that damage varied substantially, depending on the source of that damage. The recovery process then got off to a slow start; the pace seems to have moved more rapidly for single-family than for multifamily units and for moderately than for severely damaged units. Recovery will take at least another two to three years, and the final costs will exceed $4 billion. Three issues will be critical to short-term recovery: construction-sector capacity; availability of funds to finance recovery; and an adequate supply of housing, especially affordable housing, for those whom the storm displaced from their residences. Finally, following through on intentions to implement longer-term mitigation plans seems to become more difficult as time passes since the storm.
