This text offers a truly innovative, integrative framework that examines the traditional functional HR areas from a strategic perspective. This text is organized into two sections. The first section, Chapters 1-7, examines the context of strategic HR and develops a framework and conceptual model for the practice of strategic HR. The second section, Chapters 8-14, examines the actual practice and implementation of strategic HR through a discussion of strategic issues that need to be addressed while developing specific programs and policies related to the traditional functional areas of HR (staffing, training, performance management, etc.). The integrative framework that requires linkage between, consistency among these functional HR activities, and the approach toward writing about these traditional functional areas from a strategic perspective distinguish the text from what is currently on the market.

Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization policy was advocated in India in 1991 under the supervision of P.V. Narasimha Rao, the then Prime Minister of India. As a consequence, the tea plantation industry was largely affected. It has confronted difficult competition because of the simplification of tariff barriers and the removal of the quantity restrictions on imports. The result of these on the share of export of Indian tea has declined, the price has plunged, and the profitability has reduced. To remain competitive in the market, tea-producing companies have been forced to reduce the various costs, especially labour costs. Due to this, tea companies are not in a position to fulfil their responsibilities such as health, safety, welfare, and working conditions to the workers. Besides, improper recruitment of labour, lack of proper training facilities, and even irregularities in payment of wages have been increased significantly. As a result, 1.2 million workers in the tea industry to sustain themselves and their families have been adversely affected. This leads to labour unrest and the industry has become vulnerable. The final impact of all these issues spreads to the quality of tea and profitability of the industry in India. This book examines the existing human resource management practices in the Indian tea industry. It adopts a simplified yet comprehensive approach to showcase workforce management in the tea industry. This book will be of value to postgraduate students, researchers, HR professionals, and policymakers in the fields of human resource management, business history, and industrial relations.

With the onset of globalization, liberalization and technological market changes, organizations are making many strategic responses by redefining their portfolios, processes, systems and structures. At operational level, these responses are: (i) Portfolio related responses (mergers, acquisitions, demergers, diversification, share buy-back, divestiture, and so on) process related strategic responses (quality strategy, international quality certification, JIT, benchmarking, core competence, etc.) and (iii) structure related responses (strategic business units, matrix structures, and flat organization structures). This well-organized and compact text gives a brilliant analysis of the significance of the HRD system in planning and implementation of strategic responses, focussing on the alignment between strategic responses of organizations and HRD in India~s most valuable companies. The entire theme is presented with the help of exhaustive literature review and is based on empirical study conducted in 59 Indian organizations. The book is unique as it provides overview of 26 strategic responses and the role of HRD in them. The book is profusely illustrated and contains 140 tables, and a fairly large number of figures and boxes, which will enable the readers to grasp the subject with ease. The comprehensive References will be of great help in delving deeper into the topics discussed. Designed primarily as a textbook for postgraduate students of management, and postgraduate diploma students in Business/Human Resource Management, this indepth and fascinating study on strategic human resource development will be highly useful to consultants and practitioners in HRD and all those involved in strategic management/corporate planning.

This book is about engaging and empowering people through their own domestic resources, by using upstream energy to create larger downstream employment opportunities. Incorporating sustainability, resource enhancement, and energy responsibility can generate awareness and better utilization of the resources and reduce reliance on foreign aid and economic development programs, which reinforce a North/ South consumption-based economy rather than empower the localized population. The author proposes a new paradigm of employee development, localized engagement, and empowerment for resource-rich developing Asian countries, based on the utilization and upbraiding of their resources in-situ. Here scholars, policymakers, and investors will find that human resource development (HRD) can structure constructive change through criterion-based education and reap economic prosperity.
