The topics of Advances in Information Technology and Communication in Health, the proceedings of ITCH 2009, include telemedicine and telehealth, electronic health records, software assurance and usability, terminology, classification and standards, software selection and evaluation, research and development initiatives, service administration, management and self-management, nation-wide Canadian initiatives, ethics, policy and government, decision support, artificial intelligence and modeling, software design and development, educational initiatives and professional development and technology adoption and evaluation. In March 1986, a Canadian colloquium with an international flavor was convened to discuss the impact of information technology on community health. It was sponsored by the School of Health Information Science at the University of Victoria and the British Columbia Ministry of Health. This small, successful gathering was the predecessor of the Information Technology in Community Health (ITCH) conferences that followed in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000. In 2007, after a brief hiatus, the conference was held again, but this time it had expanded its scope. It was known as Information Technology and Communications in Health (ITCH) 2007; with the same acronym but with a different meaning as demanded by its international appeal and wider choice of subject areas. The conference in 2007 was an unmatched success and for the conference of 2009, an even more eventful convention is expected, which encourages experts to demonstrate and share their experiences and knowledge. The theme for the ITCH 2009 conference is ‘Revolutionizing Health Care with Informatics: From Research to Practice’.

It gives the rationale for patient safety, the theories behind the science of patient safety and then the practical methods that frontline staff can use on a daily basis to decrease harm. Pocket sized and practical, this handbook is the ideal guide to support frontline staff and trainees, as well as all allied professionals in the name of patient safety. It reflects the World Health Organization's Patient Safety Curriculum and is written by international experts in their field who have specialist interests and direct expertise in dealing with patient safety issues. Achieving health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered (STEEEP) is not an endpoint, but a journey. This journey requires a commitment to quality improvement (QI) from the highest levels of leadership combined with the interdependent development of several key components of health care delivery: administration and governance, clinical leadership, quality programs and expertise, data analytics, and accreditation. As each organization travels along its journey, these components must evolve at a common pace. With each component of a given phase of the quality journey firmly developed, the organization can expect to advance to the next phase knowing that the requisite factors are aligned. Winner of a 2015 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) has formalized its commitment to quality with the adoption of the STEEEP framework supporting the Institute of Medicine's call for health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered. This Shingo Prize-winning guide book is a companion to BSWH's recent book Achieving STEEEP Health Care. It presents practical approaches and tools, including sample workflows, forms, charters, and checklists, that health care delivery organizations can use to organize, lead, execute, and measure the impact of their own improvement efforts. BSWH has traveled the QI journey during its 100 years as the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the U.S. With a history of visionary care, its aim is to help others achieve the highest levels of quality and safety for their patients.
