The proportion of all households with television sets continued to rise during 1957, according to the results of a sample survey by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. This survey, made in January 1958, showed that 83 percent of all households had television sets; this compares to 80 percent in April 1957 and 73 percent in February 1956. In April 1950, the first time a question on television was asked, only 12 percent of all households had television sets.

The survey, conducted in May 1959, indicated that 86 percent of all households had television sets compared with 83 percent in January 1958, and 80 percent in April 1957. Thus, rapid gains have been made since 1950 when the first comprehensive information on television obtained by the 1950 Census of Housing indicated that only 12 percent of all households had television sets.

The percentage of households in the United States with television sets continued to increase during 1959 and early 1960, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. This survey conducted in May 1960, indicates that 88 percent of all households had television sets, compared with 86 percent in May 1959, and 83 percent in January 1958. The increase of 2 percentage points since May 1959 is at substantially the same annual rate as the increase during the preceding 16 months, although below earlier rates of increase. Only 12 percent of all households had television sets when the first comprehensive information on the subject was obtained in the 1950 Census of Housing, and 67 percent when the first survey of this series was conducted in June 1955.
